Nonsence..there are more American expats here then most any other country in the world. My neighbor from PA has been here for over 20 years. Another neighbor moved here from Cape Cod and just finished a deluxe 2 story house.
Oh, we also have a great life on a beach for less then $1000 per month. Try that anywhere else.
Yes, you do have to adjust to the third world, but you learn to accept it. Most people are quite poor, but live happy lives.
One advice, stick to Visayas, and avoid Manila....just too big and crowded. I have never even landed there.
As to the other post about the police:
Much ado about little. The police in my town are quite nice.
We wave to each other whenever they pass. All police are part of the PNP (Philippine National Police).
One qualification, I do not see western couples or families.
The Philippines is the paradise for single men from the west. As for blacks, I have not seen more then maybe three since I arrived, and those were only in Cebu city.
There are also quite a few Europeans here. I helped a Brit and a Belgian to move to my town.
I live on a beach in the vegetable basket of Cebu, 2 hours south of Cebu city.
I know you are quite a booster for the life in the PI but I stand by my statement that most in this country are kidding themselves if they think they can live there...
Most in the US are basically risk adverse. They need the relative safety the US provides within its borders although they complain loudly about how things are going to hill.
There number of Americans living in the Philippines decreases every year, where once they were the majority the Aussies are now and I’ve always been amazed by the number of Germans and Scandinavians there.
I don’t doubt that you have a great life but its not a life the vast majority of Americans would do well at...
He likes to chastise those of us patriotic Americans who stay in the country of our birth, telling us we're fools to stay in the "USSA". He brags about how his Social(ist) Security check is plenty enough to allow him to live in comfort while we wallow in our problems back in the nation he deserted; mind you, a Social Security check that we all pay for. Yet, for some reason he feels it necessary to pollute this conservative, patriotic forum with his sniveling little comments, Monday morning quarterbacking the evils of the "USSA", while reaping the rewards of our sweat and hard work. He then lies and says we "hate" him because he's happy and we're not. Nothing could be further from the truth...I'm happy that he's happy, and hope he never darkens this nation with his cowardly presence again.
I disagree with Americans living abroad, especially when all conservatives are needed here at home to fix the mess we're in, but that's their business. At least they aren't hostile to the nation they left, and those of us who refuse to leave her despite her problems. What makes Alex a particularly big piece of sh...uh, work, is how he rubs our noses in it while recruiting others to copy his cowardly ways, and many of us are sick of it.
Yeah Alex, your Turd World "paradise" sounds just as safe, secure and friendly as you make out. Be sure to give us a "blow by blow" report once you get your turn on the wheel.

Oh, you are right...the MAJORITY of Americans could not adapt to any third world life, but I could never adapt to life under Obozo and his Obamanation, and I do not have a six figure income that is now required for middle class life in the US. I have all I want for me and my family on $1000 per month.
I started expat life in former Communist central Europe before I had ever heard of Obama.
One has to have the spirit of exploration and some adventure before venturing offshore for anything other then a two week vacation. Only a small minority even dreams of life in another country.
I did my share of civic work, CAP, CD, Red Cross, and others during my productive years.
I should be able to live where and how I want in my retirement.

Can you give me a source for that statistic? I see many coming, but few, if any, leaving.
I see the frustrations there from the FR “dog in a manger” club. They hate my guts, and are very vile and hateful, not to mention the lies that one makes up about me. They can not conceive of one living his own free life.
It is a good thing that the founding fathers did not think like that, haha.
I am not telling anyone to leave the US, but I will help anyone that wants to expat.
By the way, I am not the only expat FReeper. Several of us will gather next week on my beach.

Compare living in the USA these days to living in Japan (and I cannot speak for the Philippines; though it is also in Asia, in many respects it is absolute night and day compared to Japan), most Americans would be AMAZED at the order, lack of crime, honesty, impeccible cleanliness, accuracy at the checkout line, high standards of medical service, calm in the midst of huge national disasters instead of looting and riots, lost items returned, people suddenly calling in and talking off 1/2 day from work just to help you all the way to your final destination if you were found to be lost as a foreigner here by a Japanese, etc. etc. I could go and on. I am only relating facts. Those who are only in the United States and have not left the bubble and experienced a life outside the United States, particularly in the First World (advanced) in a pleasant nation, really are not prepared to comment or make comparisons. It is almost 100% experiential. And I don’t think such honesty about how American has decayed under Obama and for example, for retirees, how so many places outside the USA are desirable and one is not a traitor by going there and stretching one’s retirement dollars five fold in some cases.
I see that ol’ AlexW continues to try to justify everything he does. But wouldn’t you be suspicious of the judgment of someone who would become a father in his late 60s, with all the consequences for the child that will surely follow? Also, obviously the wife, having just become a mother in the last three years, is a fraction of his age and thus is almost guaranteed widowhood.

According to one report here, it appears there may be a black hole time warp in Cebu, Philippines, where all is perfect, veggies everywhere, police are your friends, etc., while other locations are as the above - general torture, torture of genitals causing screaming from the victim. The problem with a time warp is it may come undone and revert to regular time and be as those other places which are right now seeing torture.
I have traveled to many countries staying at least two weeks at a time and some for a month and living in England many times in the past twenty five years, and I have the means to live in any of those places, but my house/garden in the United States is totally mine, nothing owed on my house or my car, and I wouldn’t give up my paradise for a foreign country.
We NEED to? Why? "These places in the world" were dealing with each other before Christ was born. They did okay as most of the ancient countries did. If they HADN'T done okay they would have been conquered by stronger countries, absorbed and forgotten.
My husband and I went to Syria when we were over there. It was SUCH a short plane from the Persian Gulf. Syria surrounds Lebanon and we never got to Lebanon because of the war. I loved Syria. My husband had one of the FIRST video cameras: 20 lbs for the camera and 20 lbs for the battery pack.
EVERYWHERE we went in our extensive travels the local security forces REALLY examined that camera. The Egyptians called it "the big camera" as they and no one else over there had yet to see a video camera.
I did get DEATHLY ill in Damascus--my fault. A store owner offered me a cup of tea, a TINY cup. After drinking it I went to their toilet. There were OTHER tiny tea cups there and the TOILET was where they were washing their cups. Ugh. I was sick for three long days. I thought, I truly thought, that I was dying. TAKE ME, LORD, PLEASE TAKE ME!
Do you REALLY think that by NOT "sorting out" those FARAWAY places our respective countries we'll end up like them? I don't. I've been to Canada twice. Last year I saw the Maritime provinces. I LOVED Canada and plan to go back a lot. I've done with my world travel EXCEPT to Canada and the USA. Canada is a strong, independent, rich, safe and WONderful country. If I were FORCED to leave the USA, Canada would be my second choice for a home.
ALTHOUGH if I do travel overseas it will be ONLY to the Holy Land. An old ARAMCO friend and I did go to the Holy Land. She's a Presbyterian and I'm a Catholic. She and I both LOVED the trip and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
It's my belief that EVERY Christian should visit the Holy Land once in his life. We can save up for what we REALLY want.
***New topic: I am SORT of planning another trip to Canada this May: it's a trip from Vancouver, all around B.C., then a train from Yoho National Park through Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, down through Sudbury Junction and finish in Toronto. I have to THINK about it because I would have to travel alone as my traveling buddy (ARAMCO old friend) has a SERIOUS eye problem that precludes her for traveling for 10 months while she takes the eye treatments.
