Amtrak's Sunset Limited goes through Arizona on its way from Los Angeles to New Orleans. The Crescent runs from New Orleans to New York via Virginia. Check Amtrak's website for information. I've taken the train across the country, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Met some great down-home people in the dining car.

Ouch! Current schedules have the shortest trip at 59 hours from here to New Orleans on the Sunset Limited, then on to Union Station in D.C.

If you're looking for a short trip, take the plane and put up with the unpleasantness at the airports.

If you're looking for a much longer trip, drive it. It's not fun looking out for the truck in front of you and the state trooper behind you, but you have the "freedom of the road".

The train is relaxing, civilized, and the trip is half the fun. A note for the unwary: Sleeping car fare is as much as first class airfare. If you don't have to get there tomorrow, and you want to kick back and enjoy the scenery, the train is not a bad way to go. I've gone across the country by rail several times, and it was fun,

So far it's all rain. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's going to go below freezing tonight, which means black ice in the morning.

Fortunately, I'm not moving the car again until Friday, and by then it's headed for the 70's.

This is why I said I'd like a better schedule between the two states.
I took the train from DC to CA back in the 90s and loved the trip...BUT...it took a long time AND we had to layover in Chicago (the return home was worse).

As publius said, it's fun to travel by train if you are not in a hurry.
I just wish the train system had more direct non-(or minimal)-stop routes between cities, as I'd love to take more trips by train.

If you travel by major airline, you'll note that they use the "hub" principle. United uses Chicago as a hub, Delta uses Atlanta, and American uses Dallas/Fort Worth.

Amtrak uses Chicago. That's why most of their long distance trains begin and end in Chicago.

During layover time at Chicago Union Station, if it's warm enough, I'll walk around the Loop and get a meal. Once I rode the El to Evanston and back. I don't mind the layover.

The best part was sitting in my deluxe compartment in the sleeping car, reading or watching the scenery roll by. In the dining car, I got to meet real people. I've had meals with authors, historians, English vacationers, and spec-ops players from the military. For sleeping car (first class) passengers, the meals are free, and I only pay for the booze.

If you have the time and want to just relax and not worry about TSA gropers and state troopers, it's the way to go.

Hey Publius, I’m with you...the best part was having your own spot in the sleeping car, having fresh juice and coffee outside your door (basically), and having someone else prepare your meals. And they have pretty tasty meals in the dining car.

Mr. Beachy and I took the auto-train to FL one summer to visit son and family. That was an experience too. I don’t sleep well on the train though.

Nobody sleeps well the first night on the train. The second night, on my trip from Chicago to Edmonds (WA) on the Empire Builder, I slept just fine.
