Ex Trader Joe's president to open store selling expired food
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 1/27/14 | Adrienne Cutway

The former president of grocery store chain Trader Joe's is hoping to make healthy food more accessible to the working poor by opening a store and restaurant that sells expired food, according to Fox News.

Doug Rauch's endeavor is called The Daily Table and will open in Dorchester, Mass. come May.

The food sold and prepared at the store will only be items that are deemed unsellable by other grocery stores. That includes items that are past their sell by date and items in damaged packaging, the TV station reports.

While I don’t think there is anything wrong with the food, I do wonder about the legal issues.

There are a number of “not-too-well-known” stores that already do this. My philosophy on this is, if the food is packaged, the seal is not broken and if the expiration date
is no more than 12 months past due, it’s OK. No frozen or fresh foods, of course.

I love Trader Joe’s. When did this guy bail? I hope they don’t change anything.

Well, they used to carry chocolate UFO’s, but no more. Anyone remember those? The story I got was the machine that made them wore out.

Would be interesting to see the same done with meds, which I suppose may already go overseas to developing markets.

I buy about all my meats from Kroger and WalMart that are at their expiration dates. I visit both stores most mornings to find the best deals. Otherwise, I couldn’t afford it.

I’ve eaten cans of soup, meats, etc that are over a year past their sell-by dates and haven’t had any problems.

You can bet your bippy at some near day in this country’s future, people aren’t going to be so worried about ‘sell-by’ dates - they’ll be worried if they can even get the expired stuff.

Yet, critics have accused Rauch of taking rich people’s food, repurposing it, and selling it to the poor, something he just shrugs off.

LOL gotta love the liberal think. Better to let them go hungry than bruise their fragile egos.

I feel zero shame about going to the local veggie farm and stand and rooting through their bruised or imperfect produce that is going to feed his hogs. I stand right there next to the hog pen and salvage what I can while tossing the true trash to the piggies. I walk away with bushels of tomatoes, peppers, broccoli etc. I bring it home and cut out the bad parts and can, dry, or freeze the good stuff.

Job Lots is pretty good at it, with a lot of quality selections. I think some of their stores are better than others, depending on the neighborhood.

"Do Twinkies expire?"

They take frequent naps and occasionally play dead, but they *never* really "expire."

No good deed every goes unpunished. Especially in Massachusetts!

Even if nobody gets sick from the food, this poor guy is going to get all sorts of abuse from those who will accuse him of being condescending to the poor by offering them "expired" food while the privileged 1% go to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods to get the fresh food.

This is going to be a train-wreck of epic proportions.

They already have a chain in Western NY that does this... it’s called Tops Friendly Markets.

I’ve got a place like this right down the street. Grocery Outlet.... http://www.groceryoutlet.com/Oakland-CA/

They are great. Canned veggies for 49 to 69 cents. Usually just days past the sell-by date.

And they sell fresh stuff as well...bread and the such.

You just have to pay attention to what you’re buying.

What I love most about them is that they carry a lot of unusual products....turnip greens, collards etc...

At my local supermarket, meat that is at, or just before, its expiration date, gets a discount sticker. It's still fine if you're going to use it that day.

I remember going to the bread store (Wholesome outlet) with my granny so she could load up on day old bread. She took it home and stuck it in the freezer.
