House Republicans are preparing to unveil their own broad template for overhauling the nations immigration system this week, potentially offering a small opening for President Obama and congressional Democrats to pass bipartisan legislation before the end of the year.
Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio and other Republican leaders are expected to release a one-page statement of immigration principles this week at their annual retreat in Cambridge, Md., according to aides with knowledge of the plan. The document is expected to call for border security and enforcement measures, as well as providing a path to legal status but not citizenship for many of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, the aides said.
The Republican effort comes as Mr. Obama is expected to push once again for an overhaul of the immigration system in his State of the Union address Tuesday, and as lawmakers from both parties describe immigration as one of the few potential areas for bipartisan compromise before the end of the current Congress.

We need to call our REPS on MONDAY before they leave for their Amnesty Retreat which is WED-FRI.
It would be a good idea to call them at the Resort while they are there, too.
And also leave a message for Karl Rove and Tom Donohue, who will be there, too.
It’s funny: We have heard that the illegals will do the jobs the rest of us won’t.
But when it comes to carrying the Dems dirty laundry to advance the cause of amnesty, it does appear that the Republicans are more than willing to do all the dirty work (for free)!
Yes: That means you, Mr Ryan, et al.
Fixed!
You can always undo Obamacare. You can’t undo Amnesty.
The GOP is determined to win the ‘who’s the biggest traitor’ contest and it looks like they have found the way.
I’ll be telephoning ALL of them Monday morning!!!
BTW, at all of their offices, too.
“Broad Immigration Plan”...
Women and hispanic voters!
The Senate will turn it to amnesty whatever’s in it.
And I don’t believe anythng from the NYTimes.
They should have done enforcement with a small reform package at the begining of the term and let it sit on Harry’s table.
Idiots.
I agree and you're right.
Hello, Darrell Issa!
Stuff your broad plan right up your as$, GOP.
The GOP needs to back off with their goofy amnesty scheme. Like ObamaCare, Americans don’t want it. Let Barry do it with his pen, phone and RACE CARD. He can take the heat from historians for destroying America’s economy, way of life, freedom, culture and traditions. When Barry dumps the Fourth of July and makes Cinco de Mayo a national holiday, maybe the low information types will wake the hell up.
I can go along with the proposal if, and ONLY if, the illegals will be placed at the END of line of those in foreign lands who have already applied for Green Card and are waiting patiently.
If above condition is present, then illegals will acquire permanent resident status (Green Card visa) with exactly the same time lag if they were to be deported immediately at tax payer expense and then filed application for a green card.
I’m done with the GOP....but I don’t know where to go.
Did you say the same thing when president Reagan signed full and unconditional amnesty to every illegal present in the country?
Did you say the same thing when president Reagan signed full and unconditional amnesty to every illegal present in the country?
/////////////////
Actually, no. I didn’t. Thank you for asking.
I have come a LONG way since then in my views on that subject. I was actually more or less pro-amnesty at the time (influenced back then by the old paper-and-ink National Review, which is STILL pro-amnesty, by the way).
How about you? Where do you stand?
If it involves citizenship and voting rights for the lawbreaking illegals I’m 100% opposed to it and to anyone who supports it.
If the commie dems and the RINOs want to bring these people out of the shadows, let them offer a guest worker program that’ll allow them to stay in the U.S. as long as they: Become fluent in the English language, obey all laws, respect and assimilate into OUR culture, and sign a pledge to return to their country of origin if it is determined that they’re a net drain on our country financially. Then fingerprint them, take their photographs and cross-check against all criminal databases.
They should NEVER get citizenship if they’re an illegal alien ‘coming out of the shadows’. If they desire citizenship they’ll need to return to their country of origin and start the process from square one, just like any decent honest immigrant has to.
“..as well as providing a path to legal status but not citizenship ..”
They may do this, but the courts will take that opening and provide citizenship - even though not constitutional.
Hang in there, we are slowly winning this thing. But like any war, the future looks bleak and it often appears everything is lost after single battles. Look at how many high ranking Republicans have to fight for the chance to run again for their seats again this year. We won’t win all the primaries, we might not even win most, but we are getting their attention, and we are encouraging the conservatives in office. At least that is my take on this situation.
NumbersUSA already produced some Immigration Principles
ETHICAL GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF IMMIGRATION POLICY
1. PROMOTES THE NATIONAL INTEREST: Just as every other country has immigration policies to protect its own citizens, the purpose of U.S. immigration policy is to advance the national interest in benefitting the citizens of the United States.
2. PROMOTES THE FAMILY: U.S. citizens should be allowed to bring in immigrants through marriage and adoption, and new immigrants should be able to bring their spouse and minor children.
3. PROMOTES PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS: Unless there is a compelling national interest to do otherwise, every part of an immigration policy should be designed to protect the ability of non-working Americans to obtain a job, and of those with jobs to earn promotions and raises for their contributions to society.
4. PROMOTES THE MOST DISADVANTAGED: Special attention should be devoted to ensuring that policies don’t reduce incentives for employers to recruit and train workers from U.S. demographic groups with persistently high joblessness and poverty, including Black, Indigenous and Hispanic Americans, veterans, the disabled, young adults, the less-educated and ex-offenders.
5. PROMOTES ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY: Policies should expedite the immigration of foreign citizens with extraordinary skills whose presence creates economic opportunity for Americans while not violating the previous-stated principles.
6. MEETS COMPELLING HUMANITARIAN NEEDS: Policies should reflect the national interest in providing for asylees, for a fair share of internationally recognized special needs refugees with no long-term chance of return to home countries, and for some immigration lawbreakers with compelling cases, provided other parts of immigration policies are adjusted to help offset the harm these humanitarian admissions may cause disadvantaged Americans.
7. PROTECTS QUALITY OF LIFE, LIBERTY and SECURITY: Since immigration policy, especially through its numerical level, can profoundly and quickly change a community, it should be set by deliberate actions, not by accident or acquiescence, with careful consideration to ensure that it does not adversely affect the quality of life, security or liberty of U.S. citizens and their communities.
Why oh why can’t they just enforce the rules already on the books?
“...as well as providing a path to legal status...
*******************************************************************
What the GOPe fails to recognize is that there already exists a “path to legal status”—it starts in the alien’s legal country with the first step being to go to the American Embassy and apply to be an immigrant. And then simply follow the process—the same process that all legal immigrants have had to follow.
