A law in Russia banning "homosexual propaganda" has been condemned by critics, who say it incites hatred. But a day hunting and relaxing in the forest - and hearing some extreme views - suggests it has plenty of support.
Saunas are supposed to be relaxing but the prospect of this one filled me with dread.
I was to share it with two heavily armed Russian hunters - Yuri, a steely-eyed veteran of Russia's bloody war in Afghanistan, and Georgy, a burly businessmen who cut his teeth during the violent chaos that consumed Russia after the fall of communism.
That afternoon, with the first snows of the harsh Russian winter blowing in from Siberia, Yuri and Georgy had taken me into the forest. They'd pointed out fresh wolf and elk tracks in the snow - but there was no sign of the family of bears I'd heard lived nearby.
Yuri said our chatter had frightened off any game but he let me fire a few potshots with his formidable but fluffily-named hunting rifle, a Kalashnikov "Tigger".
As the sun set we'd dined on a great caldron of peppery soup made with pike caught in one of the nearby lakes. They'd produced a slab of what Russians call "salo", smoked pork fat which you eat raw, washed down with shots of vodka.

The American obsession with sex has destroyed all innocent pleasures. People have been having saunas and whipping each other with birch twigs in icy climates for millennia, but it was not “homoeroticism” and was not even a lead up to homosexual behavior. I remember only a few decades ago in Spain that friends (two men, two women, etc.) used to walk around holding hands. Then suddenly this was interpreted as sexual. And now nobody would dare to do it.
This writer is an idiot, but a typical modern, Freudian idiot where everything is all about sex. (Although even Freud thought that homosexuality was the sign of an undeveloped personality.)

I turned to Yuri, the Afghan war veteran. “We didn’t even know it existed when I was growing up in the Soviet Union,” he said. “Why would people want to do such a thing?” …

Where are all the Christian leaders in The USA on all these important Biblical Christian issues?
Seems to me that there is hardly any national Christian leader speaking on Biblical truths when it comes to Christian Social Issues.

He arrives at home so to speak but doesn’t realize the apartment in Leningrad is exactly the same as his apartment back in Moscow - on the same street and it fits with the same key!
Its worth the price of admission for the world-famous opening animated montage, too good not to miss! Its a love story and its still shown every New Years’ on Russian television. It has the same meaning for Russians as “Its A Wonderful Life” does for Americans!

No. Allowing homo "pride" parades while not giving permits for heterosexual pride parades ('cuz that would be mean and hateful!) incites hatred!!

This reporter kills me. So he waits until they’re all sitting around naked in the sauna to bring up the gay issues? And then wonders why they obviously feel uncomfortable discussing it? He’s lucky he didn’t get his lights punched out.

Like Yuri, I didn't even know it existed when I was a kid and I was grossed out when I heard about it.
I think it was Freud's cocaine usage that fueled his fascination with sex (same pleasure center bombardment with addictive substances). But I do agree completely with him that homosexuality is a developmental problem.
