Actually, in some areas leaving a gun unattended is a crime.
When I take my car someplace to leave it I usually take the car gun out. Although it’s not illegal to have one stolen it is pretty stupid to make it available to somebody.

The weapon was found by the next rental customer, a woman from New York, who turned it into police. From New York? Probably wet herself. On a side note, I think this answers the question as to how thoroughly the rental companies clean cars between customers.
