Brooklyn - Council Member Inez Barron is opposed to her Council district being the site for Dennys Restaurant reported new location on Pennsylvania Ave between Linden Boulevard and Stanley Avenue.
It is insulting for Dennys to seek to come into a community that is Black and Latino. Just as we fought successfully to keep Wal-Mart with a similar history of discrimination and low wage workers with minimal benefits from coming to our community, we will wage the battles necessary to keep Dennys out, Councilmember Barron says.
"Dennys racist and discriminatory past cannot be ignored. In 1994, Dennys paid out an historic $54 million in a class-action suit after black customers all across the United States were discriminated against, refused service, and forced to wait for their food for long periods of time. They were even forced to pay more than white customers. Even recently, in 2011, Dennys settled another class-action lawsuit for $1.3 million after being sued for not reasonably accommodating a disabled person. This is unacceptable," she adds.
On the same block where Dennys plans to open, there are a plethora of such institutions including McDonalds, Popeyes, White Castle, Burger King, Checkers and Wendys - and a Subways is a block away.
We dont need any more unhealthy fast food restaurants paying slave wages in our neighborhood. Enough is enough. Moreover, East New York deserves better. We will not let up in the fight against Dennys, Barron says.
Currently, Councilmember Barron is looking towards legal action along with seeking a meeting with owners to apprise them of our communitys opposition to such a disrespectful commercial business coming into an already overcrowded fast food strip.
I have been served by or sat near blacks and latinos in a Denny’s many times and several decades ago I served people of both groups in a similar chain restaurant. Everybody eats pancakes or burgers one time or another.
Their food tasted better back when it was Sambo’s.... or my taste buds have changed. I don’t care too much for Denny’s fare.
Democrats are race hustlers and racists. No more complicated than that.
Anything that could potentially get black people off the liberal plantation (like maybe jobs?) must be stopped.
Now there must be someone that will stand up and say that. Quit cringing when these bullying racists open their mouths.
Fine, then open a Sam's Famous Pizzeria.
THAT'S for sure! You would not want to take a wrong turn and find yourself in THAT nabe. My first teaching assignment was in that area. You simply did NOT go out for lunch. You parked your car in the morning and left very promptly after school. I remember how excited we were to see a white kid in the school. There was just that one.
There are wall-to-wall fast food joints in the area, so what's the big deal about adding a Denny's? Charles Barron is a very radical Black Nationalist, so it must have something to do with Denny's politics.
I thought so!
Ein, as a young banker, many years ago, I was sent to cover for someone at a branch in the City Line section of East NY. It was quite an experience, to say the least. In later years, when I was running the bank, I never traveled there without my security guys who were all former NYPD officers. I am glad you survived your time there! Many don’t!
That is as racist as it gets.
Denny’s isn’t fast food, and the workforce and store management is is not usually white.
On seperate occasions, my wife and I got food poisoning at the local Denny's.
(I tried to warn her)
Just because one Lenny’s employee from decades ago did a bad thing doesn’t mean all of them are bad guys!
Glad YOU survived your time there. I’ve been posted in several VERY rough schools. And it always seems that most of the teachers who are assaulted and hospitalized are male teachers. I don’t know why. I deal with, “F__ you b___h, we gonna find you after school and jump you”, “F___ you b___h, I gonna kill you wid a knife/gun”, “F___ you b___h, I gonna end/snuff/kill you”, etc. My standard reply? “You and whose army? ‘Cos I don’t see anybody here except you and me.” For some reason, that seems to deflate them.
They were going to build a WalMart in my neighborhood last year, but some local poverty pimps made so much noise about it that they chased WalMart away. They claimed that WalMart doesn’t pay a “living wage”. I was so mad that I went to the town hall meeting and got in their faces about it.
“What gives you the right to deny employment to somebody who needs a job, just because you don’t think they’d make enough money? It’s that kind of self-righteous fake altruism that makes people hate liberals!”
“No it doesnt, its an absolute shiite hole! One of the worst, if not the worst, neighborhood in NYC.”
Is this location anywhere near P.S.106 where the Black, mink-wrapped, BMW-drivin’ principal who is making a six-figure income and doesn’t show up for work? I think that was in Far Rockaway.
I worked for the company years ago. Back when the Denny’s lawsuit was over, we all had to attend “diversity training”
In the diversity training class, it was always about how minorities should be treated. I raised my hand and asked this question. “Where is the discussion about minorities being diverse in their attitudes towards non minorities...it seems it is only the other way around”
I quit shortly after..
Uh, I'm white, and that's pretty much standard for EVERYONE who goes to Denny's.
Can I get some of that lawsuit $?
When Wal-Mart opened in my town a few years ago, people were happy to have them; thousands of people applied for a few hundred jobs, and everyone saves a lot by shopping there. They built on land that probably couldn’t be used for much else (in a swamp, near garbage dumps); everyone came out ahead.
“Dennys isnt fast food, and the workforce and store management is is not usually white.”
I was wondering why they were being compared to Pop-Eyes and McDonalds; it is certainly a step up from that puke.
Just before the lawsuit mrs. jimfree and I were part of a large group in a Maryland Denny's. She was not served at all.
