The axe is falling at Macy's.
The department store operator said Wednesday that it was laying off 2,500 workers and closing five stores. The company is also consolidating its regional management and restructuring its retail and merchandise planning staff.
"[W]e have identified some specific areas where we can improve our efficiency without compromising our effectiveness in serving the evolving needs of our customers," Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren said in a statement.

Yea, you bet ;) Good for establishing a Marxist society.
Closing stores in Mesa, Ariz., Overland Park, Kan., Florissant, Mo., Murray, Utah, and Rochester, N.Y
The retailer will close five Macy's stores in early spring and open five, plus three Bloomingdale's stores. Those closing: Fiesta Mall, Mesa, Ariz.; Metcalf South Shopping Center, Overland Park, Kan.; Jamestown Mall, Florissant, Mo.; Medley Centre, Irondequoit, N.Y.; and Fashion Place Mall, Murray, Utah.
Under the present regime, they will get what seems to be endless unemployment benefits, aid to families with dependent children, supplemental nutrition assistance program, EBT cards, and on and on and on ... all paid for by the remaining working Americans. And all they have to do is vote a few times for the Marxist Left (snark intended).
It takes transportation, disposable income, and leisure time to shop there. That class of customer is becoming scarce, and the whales (Vegas term for big spender) are getting more cost conscious, too.
Don’t get me wrong, there are PLENTY of people out there that have all three of the attributes above, but they aren’t the type to shop there. They’re the EBT, EITC, TANF, Section 8, WICs, & ObamaPhone crowd.
If Macy’s wants to attract them, they need to get a Deli in the stores that takes EBT, maybe a full-blown Lotto/Scratch-off Kiosk, and sell beer, wine and cigarettes.
Oh, they also need to install a Mr. Tax (We do it for you right now, and we’ll give you cash instantly - RAL).
the rest of the story goes into how Gay C Penny’s is heading into retail oblivion... Gee I wonder why, maybe all the childless, single gays decided that low priced, poorly made children’s and women’s clothing was not something they wanted to go out of their way for.
So the 2500 will get unemployment, and according to Zero & Nancy that will stimulate the economy. . . .
There are two Macy’s stores here in East San Diego County only 4-miles apart. I shop in both and unless it is during the holidays they seem pretty much deserted. I can’t imagine Macy’s needing them both or either of them being profitable. I’m surprised one is not slated for closure.
Unless it can be reversed, it will be the death of our America. To think that this Commie Btard has another three years is very frightening. My only salvation is that I can watch from offshore.
I used to love going to Macy’s in the 1980s. It was a nice place. They were only in the northeast and California. Then they started expanding rapidly and lost whatever “class” they had. Today, Macy’s is little better than Sears. What a shame.
It’s sad to look back at all the department stores that have closed in the past 30 years. Does anyone remember B. Altman? Now THAT was a classy department store!

This surprises me, as I was a big JCP catalog customer, but it was at least 15 years ago. Has it changed that much?
yes. they decided to turn their marketing towards the growing 2% of the homosexual community that don’t shop there because of the quality and much to their surprise, they offended a large part of the other 98% who stopped shopping there. It was probably the worst decision since new coke, IMO.
For the most part, retail outlets like JCP and Macy’s that employ the business models of the 60’s and 70’s (indoor mall based, high average mark-up, weekly “sales”)of our childhood will be going away and will be replaced with the “hypermarche” model in the shape of Target with a more robust online presence. This is why we don’t really see any new malls, just strips. Retail is a bad investment IMO.
I had never been in a Macys in my life, until 2010 (I was 52 years old). What I found was....a upscale shop where you’d go if you made $50,000 or more a year, and wanted to dress well and be noted as “in-fashion”.
To be honest, across the nation....I doubt if there are more than eighty cities that could support a Macys operation.
A disposable income? I’d say you need that...a feeling of dressing well for your business or church or status in life. You also need to let folks know....that you shop there...as part of your status.
“WE ARE BLEEDING TO DEATH OUT HERE IN REALVILLE!”
I’ve never shopped much at Macy’s (too expensive), but to me the most disturbing thing about this is the media silence as this country grinds to a halt. I live a few miles south of the Xanadu Mall next to Giants Stadium in NJ; it was finished a few years ago and never opened. Every week in a neighboring parking lot they hold the Meadowlands Flea Market; people who used to shop in stores are now buying essentials (toothpaste, toilet paper, food) there instead.
