Gov. Cuomo proposing to reduce speed limit on interstates in New York

Despite 65MPH being popular among many motorists and the trucking industry, the proposal to lower speed limits along major highways in NY may move in the legislature because of ardent support from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and key members of the State Senate.

Good for Cuomo!

I say New York should reduce all speed limits to 25 mph on all highways and 10 mph on all other roads!

You see, the nanny state MUST protect people from themselves and only government can do this, and should do this, in New York only.

(The last person to leave New York please turn off the lights. Thank you.)

What makes this story particularly bizarre is that it flies in the face of one of the biggest long-term highway projects in New York State. Route 17 is going to be re-designated as Interstate 86 from western New York all the way down to the NY State Thruway in Orange County. Part of this long-term initiative -- which has been going on for years and will take years to complete -- is to upgrade roadway geometry, bridges and interchange configurations to allow for 65-mph speed limits instead of the current 55-mph limit (even lower in some locations) that is in place for much of the route.

This is why engineers and planners have little (if any) respect for public officials. Cuomo probably got very little support in the Delaware River valley, the western Catskills, and the Southern Tier counties anyway.

The privately funded toll road in Denver (e-470) has a speed limit of 70. Interstate in Colorado outside metro areas is 75. Inside the metro area is 55-65 depending where. I cant believe idiots are talking about going slower again.....

I’m the only idiot in York-Harrisburg, PA, who does ~65mph; everyone else does 80-85-90mph on I83/Turnpike etc. I have tiretracks on my Jeep’s backside from speeders.

For example ... if NY State reduces the speed limit to 55-mph, then the ongoing Route 17 bridge and roadway alignment project at Prospect Mountain in the Binghamton area that is currently being done at a cost of $140M+ -- and is scheduled for completion in 2015 -- will have been overdesigned (and maybe even unnecessary).

Who comes up with these stupid ideas?

True.

And Nixon actually wanted it to be 50 mph for passenger vehicles and 55 mph for trucks.

PS - As part of efforts to bring about better compliance with the ridiculous 55 mph speed limit, Jimmy Carter DID bring us the 85 mph speedometer.

I do; just wish there was another lane besides the shoulder, as some drivers’ vehicles are sucking my tailpipe instead of simply passing.

I used to take my Dad’s new Chevy out on the interstate, and would take my foot off the gas pedal at 83mph, I was too scared the needle might get stuck when it hit 85, I’d a been in BIG trouble ;)

Of course it does not matter that Statistics showed Raising the speed limit on interstates actually reduced fatalities.

People lose concentration at slower speed. Also traffic is more jammed up causing even more fuel use due to slowing and accelerating.

“If you can’t frack for oil and gas in New York, then you’ll have to drive 35 mph and limit your thermostats to 60°F in winter until you elect a sane government. “

Those of us affected by these stupid laws CAN’T elect a sane government. The government is selected by the New York City area. Those of us upstate have no say. And WE are the only ones affected by the ban on gas drilling and proposed lower speed limits.

the governor is seeking to reduce productivity

his already bad businesses will be further beat about the head with a productivity loss stick.

The cost of a speed reduction can not be calculated........ immense it is

The cost to Europia to the north and east of New York will be immense. All freight costs will shoot up to those destiations.

Cuomo's an idiot, to be sure. But I'll go way out on a limb here and say that he's not that big an idiot.

65 MPH speed limit on the beltway around Houston and you will get run over if you adhere to it.

So THAT'S what those 'Drive Friendly' signs in Texas mean!

yea but we wave as we pass your slow a$$!

I don’t see it. No one’s screaming for lower speed limits (not safety experts, not police, not the sheriffs, not the press). There’s no political benefit, and all political costs. I’m not aware of any State going above 55 and then back to 55.
