Best guess: Electrical/Electric Transformer fire. Those things get over-loaded in the cold and they go BOOM!

These things were always blowing up in NYC, even years ago. The other fave was when the steam would simply blow a manhole cover off and collapse the street. I think some unfortunately person was killed in one of these explosions a few years ago.

Few people know this, but there is a huge network of Con Ed (or whatever they call it now) steam pipes under Manhattan streets. They supply steam to the big buildings for heating, etc. Sometimes the streets get so hot the asphalt is sticky and melting, even in the winter.
