Is it almost the end for black and white televisions? Just 11,500 households still have a license for one—and it’s a third the price of color
Talk about an anachronism, never mind the socialist aspect of the whole thing.

They weren’t real common in my childhood, now they’re virtually extinct.

I expect they’re still popular in North Korea and a few other places.

You need a license in Britain to have a TV? That’s weird.

I’m not sure I understand. People in the UK need a license to have a TV in their own homes?

You need a license to watch tv in Great Britain? my first reaction to this was, “holy crap! What a fascist country”. But then I thought about it.

We should do the same thing here. you should have to pass a test, and buy a license before you are allowed to watch tv. That would solve a LOT of problems.

The British TV license funds BBC.

You pay for BBC whether you watch it or not.

Yes, along with countries on this list. All about squeezing the public to fund state-run TV; they “pay for” receiving the broadcast signal.

Yes - People in the UK need a license to have a TV in their own homes.

The B&W license is cheaper, which is probably the only reason anybody still has one.

True. Color TV’s, radios, satellite TV, etc. Effing’ draconian, big brother type stuff. I personally know a Brit who went to Best Buy and started weeping because the BB guys didn’t ask him for a license.

You can read about it in this wiki article. It’s 145.50 UK pounds per year and 49 UK pounds if you have a black and white set.

And the enforcement arm had special electronics-equipped trucks that could tell if you had a TV, and then they’d cross-reference that against licenses. Have a TV and no license? Big fine!

They tax EVERYTHING in GB. You wouldn’t believe the cost of a pint of bitter and a pack of smokes.

I can remember when I lived there the dreaded “TV License Van” fairy tale they would tell people. Apparently (and I think fabricated), they had vans that would detect if someone had a TV in their home. Then they would get a knock on the door. I kid you not. Used to scare people into paying for (Anti-American) “Aunty Beeb”. It’s like us being forced to pay for PBS.....and all its propaganda.

BTW, they have a VAT there, too. At the time it was 17.5%. Be CAREFUL when people wish for the same here.

Lots of Mooslim countries missing from any of the lists. I suppose the IBS (infidel broadcasting systems) are prohibited.

I listen to HAM quite a bit out of GB. Heard one older gent say to the other that he couldn’t talk politics because his license would be revoked. NO freedom of speech.
