They weren’t real common in my childhood, now they’re virtually extinct.
I expect they’re still popular in North Korea and a few other places.

You need a license to watch tv in Great Britain? my first reaction to this was, “holy crap! What a fascist country”. But then I thought about it.
We should do the same thing here. you should have to pass a test, and buy a license before you are allowed to watch tv. That would solve a LOT of problems.

I got my first TV at age 12 in 1988 and it was black and white.
And the enforcement arm had special electronics-equipped trucks that could tell if you had a TV, and then they’d cross-reference that against licenses. Have a TV and no license? Big fine!
They tax EVERYTHING in GB. You wouldn’t believe the cost of a pint of bitter and a pack of smokes.
I can remember when I lived there the dreaded “TV License Van” fairy tale they would tell people. Apparently (and I think fabricated), they had vans that would detect if someone had a TV in their home. Then they would get a knock on the door. I kid you not. Used to scare people into paying for (Anti-American) “Aunty Beeb”. It’s like us being forced to pay for PBS.....and all its propaganda.
BTW, they have a VAT there, too. At the time it was 17.5%. Be CAREFUL when people wish for the same here.

I listen to HAM quite a bit out of GB. Heard one older gent say to the other that he couldn’t talk politics because his license would be revoked. NO freedom of speech.
