HAVANA -
The average monthly salary in Cuba rose 17 percent between 2006 and 2011 to the equivalent of $19, the state statistics office said Monday.
That meant the average monthly wage of workers in Cuba, where the Communist-ruled state controls more than 90 percent of the economy, climbed from the equivalent of $16 a month in 2006 to $19 last year, the office said on its website.
Low salaries are a key complaint in the Americas' only one-party Communist regime.
There is a very small salary range from unskilled to highly skilled labor, so a street sweeper might make $17 and a brain surgeon $22 a month.

If the embargo was lifted, and Wal-Mart and McDonald's opened up factories, stores, and restaurants in Cuba, and offered Cuban citizens five times as much money as they are making now to come and work for them, then the Marxists, progressives, etc. in the U.S., who had never complained about the low salaries that the Cuban government pays to Cuban citizens, would have a major temper trantram at the "exploitation" of these people by the U.S. corporations that were offering them five times as much money. The U.S. Marxists, progressives., etc., think that the people of Cuba are too stupid to make their own decision about what job is best for them.
Coming to a clinic near you.
I wonder how much they pay community organizers?
I don’t see the problem. It’s totally fair. Why should a brain surgeon live better than a street sweeper? They both work hard...
Remind me not to have brain surgery in Cuba.
Obviously Cuba needs to work harder to end income inequality.
Yeah, but those brain surgeon graduate with a massive education bill of $189.75. It’s hard to pay that off until you’re around 50 you know.
.... What the heck ..... did the Brain Surgeons get a raise!?!??
That must be the cross of the ass, since Marxists don’t believe in God. Hugo is shown kissing his ass good-bye.
Reminds me of a movie with Jose Ferrer and Cary Grant.
Jose is El Supremo, Cary is a vacationing brain surgeon. El Supremo is having headaches, which are diagnosed to be a brain tumor. They make Cary a “guest of the state” to do brain surgery on the dictator.
He needs a bigger Crucifix!
Never saw that movie. How did it work out?
That’s up from about $2 a month in the early ‘90s.
Why don’t they just raise the minimum wage?

A lot of Swedes go to Cuba for vacations. A buddy of mine tipped an absolutely beautiful girl $400 for a week’s work.
Hard to believe it but she made the equivalent of 70 times what a brain surgeon makes!
What a country, where even your medical professionals are slaves.
I had occasion to be treated in the main Cuban Army Hospital in Havana in 1995, I was having some nerve problem. The nurse at the US mission there lined up an appt with an orthopedic surgeon. The guy was equiv of a major in the US Army and earned a kings ransom of $35 a month. Other officers supplemented their meager pay by driving cabs.
Cubans get a ration card plus a maximum salary of $20 per month.
Plus, of course, whatever the women in the family can earn as prostitutes servicing foreign tourists.
Isn't equality wonderful?
