MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) Say cheese!
Say shark? Did a shark photobomb a Manhattan Beach family Friday?
June Emerson thinks one did!
Emersons Facebook page has been flooded with comments that she and her sons were definitely involved with a close encounter of the Jaws variety. Others see it more like Flipper as in a harmless dolphin.
Whatever tail you believe, the picture definitely has put a fright into Emerson.

Sure not a shark, unless they are thinking about the vacuum clearer.

No doubt that it’s a shark, most likely a great white.
A dolphin’s tail is flat (horizontal).

Perhaps they meant it in terms of shark tail vs dolphin? But in that case they should have but the word ‘tail’ in quotes.

I was a life guard at Seaside Heights New Jersey. That's definitely a Crab! All kidding aside the tail is vertical so it is not a dolphin! The fin and tail points to a shark.
Plus dolphins avoided breaking waves. When they passed our beach they were about 500 feet off shore and were gracing for their food. They definitely avoided the Boardwalk submarines although my favorite was tuna with onions and a root beer!

All the photo is showing is the darker part of the sharks back, not the lighter underbelly of the great white, but the tail is definitely that of a shark.

For some reason I’m reminded of the balloon boy hoax of a few years ago.

In other words, they may have meant it as a pun.

I found this below regarding a different incident...
This Is Not A Shark
The Beast is a fisherman and a shark enthusiast, so when something sharky happens it goes on his blog. There really hasnt been all that much going on lately (sharkwise) but The Beast has noticed in his various web searches certain pictures showing up over and over. One of the more popular is this shot of a large scary sea creature zipping by a surfer in the curl of a wave. People assume its a shark but is it?
Note the shape of the dorsal fin (A.), its curved, like the letter C. And the tail fin (B.), though faint, is broadly triangular and appears to be attached horizontally, not vertically, which would make it a fluke, not a fin.
Lets compare dorsal fins.
Heres a shark dorsal:
Heres a dolphin dorsal:

I’ve always been told by family friends who live on the NC coast that you wouldn’t be in there if you knew what was swimming around your feet. One of my favorite beaches in northern CA has been closed to swimming numerous times I’ve been there due to shark sightings. Of course the water’s too cold there for much without a wetsuit anyway, so I suppose it didn’t matter all that much but it does cast a little pall over a day at the beach, lol.

Martin, i-it's all psychological. You yell `dolphin!', everybody says `huh, what?'. You yell `shark!' and we've got a panic on our hands on the fourth of July.

I dont know how to post photos here You just copy the photo's url location (right click on photo), then paste it between the quotes in the following HTML image formula:
The "p" between the arrows are just paragraph breaks, so that any text above or below the photo doesn't get screwed up.

Photo of a Great White attacking a seal, 100 yards off the shore of Cape Cod this summer.
Fishermen have recently been prohibited from killing seals, so they are appearing all along Cape Cod shores. And along with the seals come the pursuing sharks.
The first attack on a human, since the 1930s, occurred this summer. A fatal attack is only a matter of time.
