WASHINGTON An emergency federal program that acts as a lifeline for 1.3 million jobless workers will end Saturday, drastically curtailing government support for the long-term unemployed and setting the stage for a major political fight in the new year.
The program, in place since the recession started in 2008, provides up to 47 weeks of supplemental unemployment insurance payments to jobless people looking for work. Its expiration is expected to have far-reaching ramifications for the economy, cutting job growth by about 300,000 positions next year and pushing hundreds of thousands of households below the poverty line.
An extension of the unemployment program did not make it into the two-year budget deal that was passed just before Congress left on its winter recess. When the federal program expires, just 1 in 4 unemployed Americans will receive jobless benefits the smallest proportion in half a century.

Money, sex, drugs, and guns. And the power over others those items give.
No jobs, no healthcare and now no welfare. What does that mean?
For later.
Where are the jobs? North Dakota! Go there!
Wait until she’s back on her med’s before asking her. LOL

Some people find the northern continental climate to be invigorating.
If that’s where the jobs are, that’s what you have to do.
When thousands of Pittsburghers and other rust belt denizens lost their jobs at the end of the steel mill age, they may have complained about the mosquitos in Houston or the heat in Arizona. But many still went and made the best of it.
Time to get their behinds to work! I’m thru with them slinging off me.
Yes, and probably also staycations.
So if unemployment was extended we would have an increase of 300,000 jobs. Liberal logic.
I know a man who was laid off a few years ago and took all 99 weeks of unemployment. When it ended he got another job and worked for just long enough to be able to volunteer for a layoff and go on unemployment again. Last time I saw him he said he would do this over and over as long as the government allowed this.
If there’s one thing I’ll remember about the Obama years, it will be feeling stupid for working any paying my bills.
“Unemployment was never supposed to be a career”
Government manipulation of the currency supply, commerce, capitalism, healthcare, etc, etc, etc wasn’t supposed to exist that caused the loss of tens of millions of jobs, either.
Pretty common for ski bums. They work during the season to get a pass and the. Go on unemployment and really goof off all summer.
Just like "ObamaCare" we now need a name for interminable unemployment extensions.
Absolutely. They actually want people on disability and Medicaid. It just helps solidify their base even more. Also when you throw in the fact that disability pays even more benefits than unemployment or a entry level job, it’s a no brainer for them. I can’t tell you how many people I know personally that are fully capable of working that went on disability when their unemployment ran out.
That is one effect. The other is, just maybe “some” of those losing the benefit will be out looking for some sort of work and actually raise the unemployment numbers. Bammie don’t want that.
They don't count lookers. Only unemployment benefit receivers are counted in the official unemployment rate.
For many, it’s 99 weeks sitting at a bar. I’ve met and talked with them. They’re ‘owed’ it.
I was on unemployment for 130 weeks, receiving $240/week, while I was in a TAA retraining program. It was the first time I’ve ever received anything from the govt. besides the 12 weeks of disability I got in California when my first child was born. I was a medical transcriptionist for over 25 years, making about $25 an hour, but that job is now being done in 3rd world countries for 1 penny a word. I just turned 60 and have had to totally change my occupation, which I loved, knowing the odds are low that anyone will even give me an interview - let alone hire me - with no experience in my new field.
First let us look at the good news. 1.2 million people will be eliminated from the working realm thus improving the unemployment numbers and making the democrats and Obama’s handling of the economy look brilliant.
Second. Both parties are fighting like hell to get 10s of millions of illegal immigrants here to vote for democrats making it more likely that unemployment insurance will be extended for even more people.
Thirdly, and the best news of all, Nancy Pelosi has declared that the number one way to grow jobs and improve the economy is to increase unemployement.
Every body wins.
