As the New Year looms, many law graduates with heavy debt have yet to find work as attorneys including the author of the self-deprecating new blog "Law Grad Working Retail."
The blog's anonymous author graduated from a law school that was in the top 50 ranked by U.S. News and World Report. He was on law review and even got a summer position at a firm after his second year. He didn't get a job offer though.
This grad still hasn't found legal work and took a job selling cologne just before the holidays to make ends meet. Now he says he's "liveblogging the loss of my last shred of dignity." His blog is both funny and heartbreaking.
The funny parts often involve his coworkers assuming he can answer every law-related question they have. His coworker Shaina grills him after it's discovered that another coworker named Julian is apparently "robbing the stock room blind." Here's the exchange:
"LawGrad, you a lawyer," Shaina began, "can Julian sue the store?"
"For what?"
"You know, accusing him of stealing because hes Mexican."
"But he was stealing."
"So he cant sue?"
"No."
Shaina also asks random questions like, "Is it illegal for a hospital to turn you away at the emergency room?" LawGrad tries to tell her he's not actually a lawyer, but she doesn't seem to get it and asks him at least three times what kind of law he practices.
"I told her cologne selling law," he writes.....

No wonder the guy can't find a job as a lawyer.
A lawyer is standing in a long line at the box office. Suddenly, he feels a pair of hands kneading his shoulders, back, and neck. The lawyer turns around. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" "I'm a chiropractor, and I'm just keeping in practice while I'm waiting in line." "Well, I'm a lawyer, but you don't see me screwing the guy in front of me, do you?"

What happens when you give Viagra to lawyers? They grow taller!
I would tell him the same thing I have told other college graduates having trouble getting their first job after college: Do some volunteer work for an charitable organization you believe in. You make contacts, have something to put on your resume, and are helping people in need all at the same time. There are people in need of help who have been caught in the bottomless tar pit called our legal system.
>>. Its paying the estimated taxes that made me a conservative.
There is very little that changes people’s attitudes more about taxation than having to write quarterly estimated tax payments and pay self-employment tax.
I would love to end payroll withholding and make everyone have to go through this process.
Excuse me Mr. Lawyer, but didn’t you know there’s an OVERCAPACITY of lawyers in this country? We only have 70% of all the lawyers on the planet trying to earn a living here. Why didn’t you go to a trade school and find real job skills? Oh, I know, getting your hands dirty from manual labor gives you an anxiety attack and causes you to hyperventilate. What a wuss.
And secretaries. I was a legal secretary till I became sick in 2008. I wanted to go back to work, but the jobs aren’t there. My last employer had said it would take me back, but by the time I was ready to return, everything had changed. The firm no longer has a secretary for 1 or 2 attorneys. Now it has one secretary for a whole department of maybe 6 or more attorneys. Thanks to all those electronic devices, there really isn’t enough work for that many secretaries.
If they actually had to make a living, they'd want there to be tariffs to protect US manufacturing, they'd want the invaders sent home, they'd avoid foreign merchandise that undermines our economy. They'd demand that the laws and regulations that make it near impossible to start and grow a small business were overturned.
They're the segment of the population that should be demanding change and a return to constitutional conservative values. Instead they want handouts and once they get on Medicare they'll be tied forever to upper level wellfare. We are so over as a nation.
I purchased a book from Nolo Press (a legal publisher) back in the 1990s, which was filled with vignettes of people who had gotten a law degree and not practicing law.
Back then, law schools churned out graduates at a far higher rate than the job market for lawyers could support. Apparently, this is still the case.
Anyone going to college should do some research into their chosen career field first; some majors have far more graduates than job opportunities. If they don’t do that kind of research, they have no business complaining that they can’t find a job in their field.
He may have lost his pride. But now has a chance at earning dignity through hard work.
” He didn’t get a job offer though.”
This truth would have reverberated with me. A real clanger.
There are fewer physicians in the US per person than in most OECD countries. In 2010, the U.S. had 2.4 practicing physicians per 1,000 people. The OECD average was 3.1. Obamacare or not, there won’t be a lot of doctors (and nurses) who need to sell cologne to pay the rent. (But that pathway requires a lot more effort and isn’t as pleasant as billing $350/hr for surfing the net.)
Hopey Changy stuff
It used to be there were factories to send those less academically inclined.
Now they would have to go to China.
From your keyboard to the Lord’s ears.
Perhaps this is a sign the market for lawyers has reached saturation and can not support any new comers. Now we need to retrain these younger minds in the realities and truths of Conservatism so when they do find jobs as lawyers they take over the socialist cabal who run The Bars and their collective lobbying groups in DC.
Regards and Have a Blessed Happy New Year.
Why am I not shocked that this pathetic person has a blog.
Bump
Plumbers get paid to move the turds, lawyers get paid to stir the turds — that’s why plumbers have more value.
He needs to get married and have a kid. That job will be the thing that elevates his dignity....
