With veterans' groups fighting against cuts in military pensions, the Associated Press (AP) is out with a story suggesting that in light of active duty military pay, healthcare, and "quality of life" benefits, retiring military personnel should be able to the weather the cuts that Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) has pushed through.
According to the AP, "compensation" for active duty military "is competitive with the private sector."
They try to bolster this point by showing that "an Army private with fewer than two years of service and no dependents earns on average about $40,000 annually." Later in the paragraph they clarify that the $40,000 is not all salary--only two thirds of it is. The other third is food and housing allowance.
So these privates are only getting about $33,000 a year to go overseas and become targets for Al Qaeda and other terrorists groups, but it is still okay to cut their pensions?

Just a note: their pensions are not what they earn while A/D. Just remember that.
I’ll comment.
I am not a military member, nor do I have any US pension, but I do not have a problem with our veterans being taken care of by our government.
Go USA.
military should not be treated differently then any other federal employee or elected federal position.
You know, that 14th amendment thing.
All Congressmen, Senators, federal judges, and members of the Executive Branch should be able to sustain the same cuts being made to our disabled veterans. And NO WHINING from these parasites if the warriors are to shut up about their cuts.
Looks like the AP is now getting its marching orders to try and save the bacon of Ryan and the rest of the Progressive Republican establishment.
Game on guys, and gals.
As soon as those federal employees or elected officials put themselves in harms way, are separated from their families for a year or more, and work jobs which won’t allow them to go home at night I’d agree with treating the military the same.
I’m a Vet. The sooner we ALL realize that we’re Free Agents and that absolutely NOTHING promised us from Mother Government will EVER come to pass the way it was promised, the better off we’ll all be.
There’s not going to BE ‘retirement’ for any generation beyond ours. There’s not going to BE Social Security and the healthcare system in America is being destroyed right before our very eyes.
If we haven’t planned for our OWN prosperity and needs as we age, we’re dinked.
A LOT of us are dinked.
Anyone recall Pelosi’s statement that a cut in pay or benefits would be an “affront to the dignity” of congress critters?
Via x-box spying they creeped-out young people, and now with fears of looming dictatorship they decide to anger the MILITARY...?
WOW.
Sorry, Paul, Boehner, other congressmen, Senators, and any and all press who believe this is some kind of good idea, and that those being subjected to it can "afford it." Your are completely wrong-headed and out of touch on this.
Anyone who thinks it is somehow okay to reduce the cost of living adjustments for working age military retirees, does not understand who we are talking about. Or if they do, as I said, the are completely wrong-headed and out of touch.
For those suggesting such a travesty, I suggest that they just try the following simple experiment to help them understand exactly what they are doing.
Experiment for all supporters of the idea to cut military retirees cost of living:
Each of person who believes working age military retirees should have their cost of living adjustments be cut should voluntarily sign up with the US Army, US Marines, or some other branch of US military service. They should then voluntarily go into harm's way fighting the enemies of this nation, particularly those who would have no qualms in slaughtering you by hacking your head off in front of a live camera.
Then, while so engaged in that fight, step on, or drive over an IED device that literally blows your arms and/or legs off. Survive that horrific experience, and then come home to live the rest of your life with those disabilities...in a veteran's administration that looks for every way possible to deny you care and rehabilitation over the long term.
Then have some pencil necked geeks in Washington DC tell them that they somehow "owe" it to the country to give up their cost of living adjustments to...while those same geeks earn $150,000+ dollars a year coming up with such ideas.
Only then will you be qualified to make such a suggestion...but then, having lived through that, they never would make such a suggestion in the first place on the backs of those who have already given so much.
What is the average salary of a school teacher after two years service based upon a 183 day work year with generous personal, sick, career enhancement days, paid holidays, and vacation?
This is a ball face lie..My husband is retired military and when we retired we both had to get work to survive with three children school age..also there are so many family’s barely surviving now on the salary they get some are on welfare..
I think Obama is trying to cut back all military so he can put his troop full of MUSLIMS in the military..and don’t laught I would not putanything past this bunch of fools..
Meanwhile the Dictator in our WH and his witch travel and party on our $$. There is no profanity adequate to describe these two vermin or their cohorts in Congress. RATs and RINOs must be voted out in 2014 and 2016.
It should also be noted that its quite possible to get more than this from the various welfare programs without ever having to lift a finger.
These pensions are being cut but welfare is being increased.
I love it when people decide what”other people need;” when it comes to their own budget, they use a whole different concept.
Illegals, of course, can’t take less than 10 cents of what they were promised...
I spent a LOT of time living in tents in Saudi Arabia and using communal showers and latrines. My last combat tour was in Afghanistan in 2007. And you know, I did not meet “any other federal employee or elected federal position” people there...in spite of sharing the crapper with 5,000 of my closest friends when at PSAB!
