A cancer-sufferer attending a Christmas party at a Mortons Steakhouse on Friday night was ordered to remove a beanie hat he was wearing to protect him from the cold in an unpleasant incident that escalated quickly when the manager called the police. Robert Chambers, who runs and hosts a Tennessee shopping channel show called The Coin Vault, is currently battling a treatable form of cancer which he was first diagnosed with in March. Chambers was well enough to take his employees to dinner at the steakhouses downtown Nashville branch on Friday, but towards the end of meal he started to feel the cold and so put the beanie hat on his head.The chemo I had last gives me a cold sensitivity at the end of the day. It doesn't matter what I've done, there's a certain point. Chambers told NashvilleScene.com. So I'm sitting there at the table, freezing and I put my toboggan on. We're two or three minutes away from walking out and the manager comes up behind me and says, Would you please take that off in the dining room. I said, Sure.Chambers was informed that he was in violation of the restaurant's dress code, even though it doesnt actually say anything about hats and only suggests men wear business attire or smart casual wear. While Chambers quickly obliged with the managers request, other members of the party - including his 23-year-old son - tried to explain that their was a perfectly legitimate medical reason for wearing the hat indoors.

When you talk about humility and pride in regards to men wearing hats, I have no idea what you’re going on about. A hat is just an article of clothing. Wearing one represents no more pride than wearing a suit and tie or jeans and t-shirt. Maybe it’s just a cultural thing with you. To me, it’s nonsense that has nothing to do with a person’s heart and soul and their relationship with the God of the universe.
Let me ask you this.What if this guy said you know what I think I will call Americans With Disabilities Act and file a complaint. Where would this of went had they became involved ? You might recall back in May 2013 A disabled Army veteran in Houston at Motel 6 filed a lawsuit for their pools do not have a fixed pool lift or other acceptable means of entry for disabled persons.What would happen if the Americans With Disabilities Act,stepped in started asking questions of why were they demanding notes from dr’s that indicates what his medical condition is ?Should Mortons be given assess to someones medical file about what their medical condition is in the form of a note/letter ? Listing all his medications and their side effects ? Listing in detail what chemo does and does not do ?Should his medical information be made for public consumption ?
I understand about dress codes, and believe me, no one is more sympathetic to attempts to stem the tide of careless frumpy dressing (thus, approach to life and others) than I.
These people went overboard. The people had been there a long time, were just about to leave, and tried to explain that the man has cancer (although COO said they had no idea he had a medical condition - hmmmm; were they just unctious and laid into them without mentioning cancer). I don’t think the police had to be called unless the group started getting too rambunctious. I think they should have given the benefit of a doubt. Even ask if they were ready to leave.
Which leads me to my straying on a slight tangent. These skullcap knits (if that is what it was) are not attractive. I highly suggest, especially to be ready for upscale places, buying a nice felt HAT. Yes, some won’t want head covering at all, but explaining ahead of time and having something more attractive can lessen the tension. My sister, ever the high-class designer, would wear a cute hat or beautiful scarves to wrap her head when she had chemo loss. Get a decent felt hat and you shouldn’t feel so cold. I use them all the time in winter, and boy does it make a difference, and pretty too.
Don’t get me started on the ADA.. Been There and Done That.. You have no idea of how a civil consideration, can become an ugly gargoyle..
“Prima facie evidence” then? Well, okay then.
I don’t think the social outrage is about their (unposted) dress code regarding hats.
The outrage is about the unintelligent application of it, reminiscent of zero tolerance school policies.
We expect better of a high class private restaurant and managers that act like petty bureaucrats (your papers, please) get what they deserve from the social backlash.
The Morton’s staff acted stupidly... now they and every other person in the industry knows about it. They won’t do that again any time soon. Many cancer patients have just been saved from similar grief in the future.
All this without government intervention.
If only social outrage could work on Congress this effectively.
I know where you are coming from. Many people making a living looking for anything of which ADA can step in and reward them with a big pay day.This is why I ask,what if he did call them ? Imagine right now how many scammers out there,soon will they be checking out this place in hopes they can find any reason to sue them.They know the ADA codes by heart. Now that the word is out.How many will be checking out this place and looking for a big pay day over anything?
I wouldn’t want to start my business life over again, especially under these conditions.. My hats off to those that have succeeded in this swamp of laws and regulation, not to speak of the decline of our culture and morals..
It was getting late last night and I was having a hard time taking this story seriously, so I had some fun poking.
I mean we wade through hundreds of comments about how this country is over, or will be over if one bill or another passes into law, a bit fatalistic at times.
And I come across this thread about some problem in a restuarant that many here are commenting like its a serious national problem.
Maybe its a sign that things have slowed down for holidays, congress on vacation, little going on.
I noticed Megyn Kelly did two segments on Sana's race running out of material.
You must rebut the evidence with some argument or challenge. “Well, okay then” does not suffice.
Please explain how I could possibly ask you for a note from your doctor proving that you have a medical condition, without being aware that you have, or claim to have, a medical condition. Being aware that you claim to have a medical condition prohibits me from honestly stating that I “had no idea that (you) had a medical condition” doesn’t it?
If you choose to contend that the employee or manager never asked for a note from the doctor, then we are free to call into question every statement of fact concerning the incident - including the offer of apology or the existence of the restaurant itself.
You are free to do so.
You’re the one who challenged me - but without any substance behind your reprimand, evidently.
If you’re not willing to make your case, please refrain from contradicting me in the future. You’re more than welcome to challenge anything I say - as long as you’re willing to back it up with something meaningful.
When I had chemo I had to wear something on my bald head at night or I would have frozen to death since your body heat escapes through the top of your head especially with no hair!
You’re so eaten up with it, go write a letter or something.
Pathetic - you aren’t big enough to admit you have nothing with which to justify your attack on my statement, so you attack me.
Not eaten with it at all - I just demand some substance from anyone who wants to challenge something I’ve said. You have lowered yourself to playground taunts - which do not constitute substance of any kind.
You’re just making a mountain out of a molehill. Why don’t you write a letter and demand they fire the manager?
