I don’t think the social outrage is about their (unposted) dress code regarding hats.

The outrage is about the unintelligent application of it, reminiscent of zero tolerance school policies.

We expect better of a high class private restaurant and managers that act like petty bureaucrats (your papers, please) get what they deserve from the social backlash.

The Morton’s staff acted stupidly... now they and every other person in the industry knows about it. They won’t do that again any time soon. Many cancer patients have just been saved from similar grief in the future.

All this without government intervention.

If only social outrage could work on Congress this effectively.

Well stated. And, in that light I agree with you whole-heartedly. It is common to make exceptions to the rules as they are requested and warranted. As long as we don't betray the legitimacy of our ability to establish the rules on private property, I'll let the cards fall where they will.
