My cancer 'mind torture': Hull pub landlord Tony Dunbar, of Hessle Road's Alexandra Hotel, hits out at hospital delay

A HULL landlord undergoing treatment for "aggressive" prostate cancer received a letter informing him his hospital check-up was being delayed three months. Tony Dunbar, 66, who runs The Alexandra Hotel in Hessle Road, west Hull, was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
Earlier this week he received a letter from Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust informing him his appointment at Hull Royal Infirmary, which was booked for December 30, had been put back to March 3.
Mr Dunbar, who has run the pub – – once a popular haunt of the city's trawlermen – for 26 years, said: "When you have aggressive cancer, it is constantly on your mind and you expect your appointment to be kept.
"Being told your appointment has been put back three months is the last thing you want to hear from the hospital.

I’m glad I had my cancer in 2012. I was diagnosed, scanned and had the cancer removed withing two weeks. I had access to the oncologist of my choice and given the option of choosing whether to pursue further treatment basked on risk vs. benefit rather than cost to the state.
Who knows what would happen if I were diagnosed in 2014.
My brother-in-law was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer at the beginning of December. He lives in Canada. Surgery is scheduled for February.
That would be torture, when I knew the cancer was there, I wanted it cut out NOW. I’m not sure if it made a difference for long time survival but the feeling was kind of like knowing there was a communist sitting as president of the USA.
The damn NHS Trust in England. And this is what Zero wants for us. He, of course, with selected members of Congress, will be exempt.
The NHS when started in England, excuse me, the United Kingdom, looked like a miracle. Everybody got free health care. Sailors waited until they landed in England to get new false teeth FREE. An American became seriously ill when visiting there. He got FREE hospital and doctor’s bills paid by the NHS. Everything was wonderful.
Now they cancel a working man’s cancer treatments, and a sick baby choked to death when they ran out of baby food and fed the baby a cracker.
ETC, ETC, ETC.
At least England, oh, excuse me again, the United Kingdom, got a free ride for a while. Zero’s insurance can’t even keep their records straight.
GOD HELP US!

I would bet in most socialist countries,prostate surgery is performed way more often than radiation treatment.
When the final bills are in on 42 radiations and before and after care, it is close to $200,000.
Surgery is more in the vicinity of $30,000.

hell, even here in the boondocks you can get a diagnosis and a power port put in in less than two weeks from diagnosis... many times a week or less
Medical care strictly reserved for people with the right connections: that’s how everything is done under Marxism, isn’t it?
Those days will soon be gone forever and you can expect to get the same kinds of letters that Tony got.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August of last year. had a double mastectomy and port put in me in September. Went through chemo for a year afterward along with breast reconstruction.
Now I am finished. By His grace I came through without any problems.
I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination.

I agree 100% that the United States had a great medical system, and I did not want the ACA, either.
But, even before the ACA, the level of care received did depend on where you went. For example, when I was diagnosed in late 2010, eight weeks later my surgery was still being delayed. Thankfully, I switched to another surgeon who took me right away. Having the option to go somewhere else made the difference. Surgeons compete for patients - it’s a system that works.
As a side note, I’m surprised every day by the large number of us here on FR who are cancer survivors and/or fighting cancer now.

I am hoping, partly because of Uhbama’s illegal extension to corporate insurance and partly because of sheer momentum, that my next year will not be too much worse than good old-fashioned American care.
Diagnosed in Sept and surgery by Halloween, now complicated by pulmonary embolism (PE) for Thanksgiving. I will be fighting both, potentially. Still waiting for 2nd opinion this week on status of cancer. Initial oncologist thinks I’m OK to go, but wants more expert opinion. So we’ll see. But definitely I am facing PE issues for at least 6 mos.
I think I’ll be OK in that time, since things probably won’t change drastically. But I always have concerns about this communism foisted on us!
Obamacare Leaves Cancer Patients out in the Cold

“Today, I’m signing this reform bill into law on behalf of my mother, who argued with insurance companies even as she battled cancer in her final days.” President Obama, March 2010.
Protecting the sickest of the sick – that is what the new healthcare law was intended to do. Yet, cancer patients and survivors have seen their much-needed policies, doctors and treatment options vanish under Obamacare. The law has created more vulnerabilities than safeguards within the healthcare system. Robert – a cancer survivor from Virginia – knows this all too well.
“I was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer in January of 2011. I had a successful surgery in February. My urologist/surgeon, co-owner of a small practice in East Tennessee, did a great job for me. I needed no chemo or radiation treatments. He has seen me every 6 months since the surgery. August 13, 2013 was my final 6-month appointment with him. He informed me that because of huge extra costs to his practice and reduced procedural payments contained in the so-called Affordable Care Act, he and his partner were forced to make a decision as to whether to continue their practice. His partner decided to retire (prematurely), and my doctor was lucky enough to find a job with a local V.A. hospital,” explained Robert
Robert’s doctor is not the only one who has had to face this tough decision. “My urologist told me he knows of 5 other “mom & pop” medical practices in the area that have closed or are also closing before year-end because of Obamacare,” he shared.
Combine this trend with a narrower network of providers within the new ACA plans, and it spells disaster for those needing care as Washington Examiner’s 16-city study revealed:
“Similarly, agent David Fear in Sacramento said, “Roughly a third of the doctors are going to be accepted in the networks. I’m finding very few specialists in either the Anthem or Blue Shield networks.”…
Meanwhile, nationally known health insurance providers like United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna and Coventry are staying out of the Obamacare exchange marketplaces.
Other well-known companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield are in, but are sharply narrowing their networks to exclude many doctors, as well as elite hospitals…
In Georgia, Humana exchange patients are discovering the insurer operates only one approved hospital in the entire state.”
For cancer patients and survivors like Robert, things could even be more difficult as two of the nation’s leading cancer centers are excluded, according to the Financial Times.
“[T]he majority of insurance plans being sold on the new healthcare exchanges in New York, Texas, and California, for example, will not offer patients’ access to Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan or MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, two top cancer centres, or Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, one of the top research and teaching hospitals in the country.”
While Robert is fortunate that he no longer needs to see a cancer specialist, he knows that going back to his urologist, who provided great care, is not an option for him, if a future need arises.
“I think the majority of people like me weren’t 100% satisfied, but they were very satisfied with their coverage before any of this [Obamacare],” he said.
For those who have lost so much due to Obamacare – Bill Elliot, Edie Sundby, Gloria Canter, Joan Carrico, Debra Fishericks and many others – they would agree.
