South Africa's deaf federation has confirmed that an interpreter using sign language during the Mandela memorial was a "fake".
Concerns over the male interpreter had been raised by deaf people watching the service at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
Bruno Druchen, national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa, said the unidentified man who was on stage alongise world leaders including US President Barack Obama, "was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for".

It would be pretty BASIC, as I see it.
He’s too busy trying to survive on TV sitcoms playing bit parts...
I really think they need to have a reunion show for those who are still around from the hey days of SNL...And not mention the stoopid goobers they have on the cast (show)now...
Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, Jane Curtain, Garrett Morris, et. al. that genre of performers were classic and priceless...Ithink they might even be able to drag Steve Martin in to guest host the show(s)...Maybe even Robin Williams...
That stuff was funny raght thar, I don care who ya arre!!!
Could this “memorial service” have been any less classy?
I like the idea of basic universal sign language, but that would have the effect of decreasing its usefulness.
My experience is that you can learn hundreds of nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a foreign launguage without a lot of effort, but the communication provided is extremely basic. It gets you through the daily necessities (food, lodging, purchasing), but a real conversation involving concepts is impossible. To really catch on, a universal sign language would have to be robust enough to explain a persons medical symptoms, tell jokes, etc.
This may have been the first international gathering where TWO current Kenyan presidents were in attendance!
As a side note, I think we’ll have truly effective electronic translators in the not too distant future.
Text translation is already making remarkable leaps, and in a way, text is a sign language.
Verbal recognition has a ways to go, but I think its doable. Keeping in mind that people of the same language and dialect don’t always understand what the other is trying to say.
It’s the thought that counts so each person must find their own meaning in the hand movements and interpret it as they must.
Will Garrett Morris please pick up the courtesy phone
Most of the people there were fakes including the guest of honor so this is no surprise.
Looks like they asked the beard to take the picture and she said no.
Maybe he was signing in French.
Yeh, it’s sad to see Morris so underappreciated.
The current cast of SNL isn’t very funny, and there have been only a few bright spots on the show in the past decade.
Andy Samberg typifies the dull humor: “Oh, he’s doing/saying something anti-social. Funny!”
Will Ferrell is the Owen Wilson of comedy. The same self-unaware character being reconstituted everywhere.
Another example is Bill Hader’s “Stefon” character. Are we supposed to be accepting of flamboyantly gay people, or laugh at them? Laughing at them on the small screen is an option for bien pensant liberals, I guess.
I realize that none of these three are on the show any longer, but they set the template that is being followed.
> Fake interpreter for a fake President.
Beat me to it...: )
I loved the bit they did when Carter was on doing the "Pepsi Syndrome" 3 mile island skit.
Curious, I looked - he’s now doing a TV show on CBS.
And he’s not dead.
