The number of U.S. battlefield fatalities exceeded the rate at which troop strength surged in 2009 and 2010, prompting national security analysts to assert that coinciding stricter rules of engagement led to more deaths.
A connection between the sharp increase in American deaths and restrictive rules of engagement is difficult to confirm. More deaths surely stemmed from ramped-up counterterrorism raids and the Talibans response with more homemade bombs, the No. 1 killer of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
But it is clear that the rules of engagement, which restrain troops from firing in order to spare civilian casualties, cut back on airstrikes and artillery strikes the types of support that protect troops during raids and ambushes.

Brother Barack's gift of piety to his brother jihadis: American dead.
That's because the winners are the ones smart enough to make up the ROE as they go along, and impose them on the adversary.
"Adapt. Improvise. Overcome."
IMHO LBJ was a sneaking coward who secretly hated better men and sought private vengeances against them.
MIA: The MSM
KIA: The Truth
Either give the troops a free hand or bring them home. Don’t let them be bullet stoppers with little ability to fight back.
Maybe when the day comes that the military is expected to be the president’s bully boys, they’ll remember how much of a $hit he took on them after sending them to fight for his re-election campaign.
Let’s give the Secret Service the same ROE, allow DC folks to carry RPG’s, and see if anybody in DC wakes the heck up.
“IMHO LBJ was a sneaking coward who secretly hated better men and sought private vengeances against them.”
You are correct.
Look at all the good men serving in Nam who suffered from what this evil bastard did to them.
Ask the survivors of the Pueblo and Liberty, how they feel about LBJ.
How many CIA operatives and MIL intel and specop guys were sent on a mission and abandoned?
They did it to us in Nam. Right before I was wounded, we went out on our final mission, before the 4th Infantry Division was to come home in December 1970, we were TOLD that on this final mission, we were NOT to shoot at anyone, nobody, unless we FIRST CHECKED THEIR ID CARDS!!! EVEN if they were in their nice little black PJ’s AND carrying an AK-47, we WERE NOT TO ENGAGE them unless we first check their &#^&@@*^ ID cards!!! Our platoon sergeant told us if anyone did not shoot everyone of them, he would shoot us!!! He said to shoot every stinking one of them, and THEN we would check their stinking ID cards. By the way, we were all wondering, WHO THE HECK ISSUED ID CARDS TO A BUNCH OF STINKING VC out in the wilderness?????
I’m speechless. As a Marine mom with a bad temper I want to know who issued that order. If I were there, I would have thought it a joke at first it is so ludicrous. If you are on Facebook, there is a page “Rules Of Engagement” for those of us infuriated at the treason.
I am glad you came home and hope you are well. My youngest brother went to Nam last year to teach English, and the woman he stayed with ate rats for dinner. Not democrats.
Codeword in 2013 doublespeak "win hearts and minds".
Agreed. They are probably wondering why we are such weak saps.
He has shown a distinct turn to the left since releasing the first volume of his three-volume (maybe four eventually) bio .... he appears to admire LBJ in power, dispensing liberal laws and executive decrees left and right.
However, he told us what the man was really like in the first volume, when he told us how Congressman Johnson, while ruthlessly driving his own small staff (that included John Connally) to work all hours in satisfaction of his demands for political "responsiveness" to constituents (he had a one-day rule for replying to letter-writers), toadied relentlessly to more-powerful men. In particular, he sucked up to a senior senator from Virginia, who mentored LBJ extensively and gave him much valuable access to the wheelers and dealers of the day. LBJ's repayment to his own ego consisted of bagging the senator's wife every time the senator went out of town.
How can a man like that be "great" at anything? But liberals defend him to the last ditch (except on Vietnam, where he killed too many Communists), simply in order to defend their own lame nostrums.
Thanks, the more I hear about LBJ, the more I dislike him.
Germans and Japanese citizens should be irate over this. We killed them in droves,
HOW TRUE.
