Backers of the movement for higher pay point to studies saying that the average age of fast-food workers is 29 and that more than one-fourth are parents raising children.
Simon Rojas, who earns $8.07 an hour working at a McDonalds in South Central Los Angeles, said he would join Thursdays one-day strike. Its very difficult to live off $8.07 an hour, said Mr. Rojas, 23, noting that he is often assigned just 20 or 25 hours of work a week. I have to live with my parents. I would like to be able to afford a car and an apartment.
Mr. Rojas said he had studied for a pharmacy technicians certificate, but he had been unable to save the $100 needed to apply for a license.

Not when most people don't understand how to turn on a stove.
There are some jobs left. Let’s kill them, too!

“I have to live with my parents... he had been unable to save the $100 needed to apply for a license”
Stop smoking, drinking, doing drugs, or whatever the heck else your spending your money on then cause it ain’t rent
Then maybe they should say it.
There are several reasons for not saying it one of them brand new ObamaCAres 30 hour full time mandate. McDonalds probably doe not want to anoy the Obama administration.
When I worked at McDs it was the assistant managers job to schedule all of the workers to ensure no one EVER worked 40 hours. This was to ensure that everyone was a part time employee. So now that requirement will be to ensure that everyone works less than 30 hours.
They will in reality make sure that everyone works substantially less than 30 hours. Note that he says that he works between 20 and 25 hours per week. This leaves room in the employees schedule for him to be called in to work a 4 hour stint if some one calls off or does not show up for their shift and he still will be under 30 hours. This happens a lot in fast food because many of these young have not been taught the importance of showing up for work everyday and on time.
This is a unintended consequence of ObamaCare. Fast Food workers have had their hours cut because of the Democrats stupidity.
This idiotic thinking is encouraged by the Democrats and the Unions for their own ends. Many union contracts have stipulations that the lowest paid union workers will be paid at least a certain amount more than the minimum wage. This has the effect of boosting union wages.
Another reason for Democrats pushing this living wage idea is that Democrats basic idea of fairness. The idea that employers are unfair to workers is that bread and butter of the philosophy that feeds the Democrat power base. Fairness and Equality are the fictions that generate the hatred that keeps Democrats in power.
at $8/hr for 29 hrs... he’s grossing about $1000/mon.
if he’s living with his parents, he should be able to save $100
meanwhile... he makes only $8/hr? what’s he doing? flipping burgers? oh, he is... yea... that how much those positions pay... because everyone can do them.
When I was 18, I worked seven days a week, had three Part Time Jobs and took a couple of Night Classes in Junior College.
I had a big Motivator, MONEY. It allowed me to pay my Rent, make my Car Payment, Eat, Save for a rainy day, you name it.
One of my Jobs made me eligible for Health Insurance, as long as I had the Premium deducted from my Paycheck.
Maybe I should have gone on Strike instead.
I didn’t mean to offend. I apologize.
“Invest in industrial kitchen automation companies.”
I have 25 years of experience in automation, and many things related. I am seriously considering retiring from my day job and expanding my side business to a full time business to do just that
I’ll remember you when I decide to make the same move, myself. I see huge demand in agricultural automation as well.
And you will find SEIU, mining for mountains of union dues.
I too would like Mr. Rojas to be able to afford an apartment and a car of his own, etc.
Mr. Rojas, since you are stuck with only a 25 hour job instead of a regular 40 hour job (we thank Obama and his policies for that!)
you have time on your hands. May I respectfully suggest that you look into what your local community colleges have on offer (and yes, they will waive most of the fees for you, too! .. just ask for a Board of Governor’s Fee Waiver....and then ask for any additional financial aid you may require, too, they have some)
California has the nation’s cheapest community colleges (even before the fee waivers and financial aid programs).
And, you have 21 local community colleges just in LA county, plus Orange County has more, too.
They also offer free career counseling (but look around to see what careers are good for you, too)
Good luck! You have a real opportunity right now in your life, living with parents and with a modest job for some income too, plus free time on your hands. This is a much better opportunity for you than if McD’s were to suddenly give you 75 cents more an hour.
You can really make something of yourself NOW in your life.
Go for it!
I got laid off from my job and took a job at a supermarket making minimum wage, even though I qualified for $330/week in unemployment benefits. They started me at 28 hours a week then cut it down to 20 plus they wanted me to travel to another store the next town over to do some auditing. I quit to concentrate on finding something better, even if it was another minimum wage job with better hours. Because I quit the state said I no longer qualified for unemployment benefits. So now they consider going from a full time 40-hour week to 20 hours with no benefits as full employment. I would have been better off sitting at home playing video games. I ended up finally finding a full time job but if I ever get laid off again I’ll know enough to leave my ambition at the door and sit on my butt until I get minimum 40 hours.
One thing I did find is that in my area minimum wage jobs with limited hours and no benefits are readily available. The same week I took the job at the Supermarket I got calls from 3 other places looking to take me on. So if you want to do the 2-3-4 job circuit it is doable.
If I had a job working 20-25 hrs a week, and not going to school, I would get another PT job to go along w the other job
This is what folks did...well I guess used to do...
actually, he does not have to get his GED.
anybody 18 or older may attend California community colleges, earn associate degrees or certificates in any number of trades, and transfer into the CSU California state universities system if they wish, too, to complete BA or BS degrees.
(federal financial aid programs may require the GED or HS diploma, depending, that he would need to check further. But there are also state financial aid programs and the fee waiver program...)
I’m sure not of these robots have ever considered blaming the current administration for the almost 6 years of economic stagnation they are in.
If a job isnt giving you enough hours, you get another part time job.”
Since he needs only $100 to get his license, working a second job for less than a week should pretty well cover that. Looks like maybe he should take a math course while he is at it.
I know what to expect from a fast food joint. it’s not gourmet but it’s a tremendous deal for the speed and convenience.
I can get two sausage burritos at Micky D’s go into the drive through pay $2.20
for breakfast doing this under 4 minutes.
