No, they got their name from Boston redskin beans. They were the Boston Redskins originally.

Why does a team choose a name? What goes into it? What vision does it project? What is the plan going forward.
The team chooses the name because they see it as noble, one they would be proud to be associated with, one they see as a strong honorable name from history, one that projects strength honor and pride, one they can build on for the future.
My, how insulting it must be for Native Americans to realize a team and it’s fans think highly enough of them, they want the image of them to be a part of their persona.
I wish Native Americans would fall in behind the Redskins team. Hell, give 250 of them season tickets on the fifty yard line. Have a drawing each year and choose another fifty.
Put together some half-time shows depicting the ancient way of life for Native Americans.
Let the negative folks go look for chestnuts.

From the Yahoo article ...
"assertions that the Code Talkers were being used as props in a public relations stunt meant to deflect criticism over the name." Dear Reader would never stoop to using "his people" as props.
Snort.

Several years ago I saw a photo taken in Italy during World War II of an Army signal corps unit seated at long tables speaking on large field radios. What caught my attention was all the radio operators were African Americans. I wondered at the time if these people might be code talkers, communicating in Black dialect to confuse German army listeners.

WW2 Navajo Code Talkers Appear in Redskins Jackets; Liberal Heads ExplodeNah, their easy response is "They can wear it, just like blacks can say *n-word*".
And then the liberals can somehow go back to pretending that they are for Equal Rights.

Code Talker says Redskins name not derogatory http://news.yahoo.com/code-talker-says-redskins-name-not-derogatory-172147791spt.html What does this fake Indian know. Hes a race traitor for serving in whiteys war.Exactly - if he's "too stupid to be outraged" as his slavers think he should be, then his opinion doesn't count - he need to be locked up in a loony bin.

My great grandmother was 1/2 Cherokee. I am NOT offended by Redskins name! I grew up in Oklahoma which means Land Of The Red Man. Our high school mascot was a CHIEFTAN! Jr Hi was Jr Chiefs. Big deal. It is NOT insulting! Indians were here before white men and had a civilization that had lasted thousands of years. Maybe they fought back when ppl came to take their land. Trail of Tears was horrible. But we all got over it or should have by now! Thankful to live in USA!

Many organized sports began to happen during the beginning of the 20th century when there was a HUGH focus on Indian culture and lore. Indians were considered people to emulate by many groups and Scouting. Many summer camps were started at that time, all with Indian names and rituals.
