It's been a tough year for the liberal cable news outlets.
Data released Tuesday show CNN shedding 48 percent of total viewers since last November and MSNBC dropping 45 percent.
The numbers were even worse in the all important demographic of people aged 25 to 54 as CNN's ratings dropped 59 percent and MSNBC's 52 percent.
In an off-election year, and with last November's numbers skewed higher as a result of the presidential election, it should be expected for ratings to decline.
However, Fox News didn't see close to these losses. In total day, FNC is only down 18 percent since last November and 30 percent in the demo.
As you might imagine, prime time numbers were also down.
CNN was off 54 percent in total viewers and 62 percent in the demo. MSNBC declined 50 percent in total prime time viewers and 57 percent in the demo.
By contrast, FNC was second in all of cable in prime time this November averaging over 2 million viewers. This represented a decline of 21 percent in total viewers and 41 percent in the demo.
As such, no matter how you slice it, the liberal cable networks fared much worse in the past twelve months than their far more centrist competitor.
We're doing even worse than our colleagues in the fish wrap business.
Half of Zero is still zero..................
Viewership down - doesn’t matter. Obama will ensure they receive enough advertising money to keep going.
It’s not ad revenues, it’s their share of cable subscriptions ..
But either way, the viewership erosion is significant for other reasons .
I never understand why, at least around where I live, whenever there is a TV in a waiting room (or at McDonalds), they always have CNN on. Always. Who makes them put that crap on?
I’ve never understood the CNN and MSNBC business model. If your goal is to make money through advertising, why would you intentionally alienate half of the potential viewers?
Some would say “they don’t care, they’re only in business to push the liberal-democrat agenda”. To which I say fine, but they’ve already got the hardcore liberal audience, how do they expect to change hearts and minds by preaching to the choir?
Whichever way you cut it, it makes no sense. Fox News has been beating them in every way simply by being centrist and not taking either side. Something they teach in Business 101.
CNN will very soon reach the point where the only way to lose more viewers is for people to spend less time at airports. This will be their “terminal velocity”.
The problem is that all of the above, including faux news, still have viewers. But happily, the viewers seem to be disappearing over time. I think a lot of it is websites like hulu that allow people to download content on demand. And also the fact that you can get a lot more information in less time on the web without the fake drama.

Showing they are part of "changing the world" with clips of a bunch or vermin ridden hippy protesters.
If people want to hear bullcrap they can just make up their own. Likely as well as what CNN and MSNBC make up......
I don’t think MSNBC is actually real. Just turn it on for a few minutes. The sets look weird, the lighting is weird, the graphics are weird, even the sound is weird, and the hosts are veritable freak show. It looks like something The Matrix would come up with to approximate what a news network would look like.
“CNN was off 54 percent in total viewers and 62 percent in the demo. MSNBC declined 50 percent in total prime time viewers and 57 percent in the demo.”
And that shows that the liberal elite doesn’t care much about money as so many people have always assumed. They care about the leftist agenda.
Same where I live. Doctors office or nursing homes ect ect. All tuned to CNN.
Funny story. A few years ago in school, one of the academic buildings lobby had a small cafe. They had three TVs. Two were large flat screens mounted on the walls, one was a old 19” CRT mounted on a support colum in the corner of the room.
The flat screens almost always had ESPN on one of them, and either Fox News or Discovey, MTV, etc. The old 19” CRT in the corner always had CNN or MSNBC on, surrounded by the most miserable looking group of students and faculty. Anyone could walk up and change the channel, but I never saw anyone change it from Fox to CNN or PMSNBC.
I wonder why those four people stopped watching?
Actually it just tells me libs are getting their propaganda dose from more “modern” portals.
The internet, social media, etc.
Cable tv (like newspapers) is an increasingly older demographic (other than sports programming) so it likely trends Republican.
The VA used to have FoxNews on all the time too but something happened. I wonder what?
