Elian Gonzalez, the object of a 1999-2000 custody squabble involving Washington, Havana and family members on both sides of the Florida Strait, holds a piece of U.S. legislation directly responsible for what he endured then, Cuban official media said Monday.
"They were very sad times for me, which marked me for my whole life. I was never given the chance to have a moment to think about my mother, who as a result of that (U.S.) Cuban Adjustment Act died at sea," the now-19-year-old Gonzalez said last weekend during a Union of Young Communists event.

Union of Young Communists event.”
...they write this like it’s everyday and the norm.
Reno and Clinton.
This was worse than Obama.
And there were “conservatives” saying to send him back.
Janet Sterno.
How is Cuba like America?
In America all transactions are done in dollars and Cuban pesos are worthless.
Same in Cuba.
Well kiddo, if you want to honor the ultimate sacrifice that your Mother made out of love for you, defect to the U.S., denounce Communism, and live the rest of your life as a free man.
FReepers are often incensed at the practice of anchor babies and illegal immigrant children, and yet, want an illegal immigrant forcefully kept in the U.S., against his father’s wishes no less.
I don’t get it.
The US killed his mother, he now says ... Sad beyond words. God forgive those who let this boy down. Now he's Fidel's little puppet. God forgive those who fought to send him back.
I think it was as much the manner of the taking of Elian, with SWAT teams and submachine guns that t’d people off.
And, then again many Cubans in America view every person who can leave there as a victory against the evil Castro brothers.
It’s odd that he holds the USA somehow responsible, it’s Cuba that has policies that force people onto rickety boats to escape. His mother made that choice because Cuba sucks. Americans who want to go to Cuba traditionally take jets from Canada or Mexico. If you want to boat to Cuba you can, no one in Miami is going to stop you, and you’ll have the choice of many thousands of very seaworthy boats to use and all the gas or diesel you need at market prices.
He will never be allowed to leave Cuba, at least till the regime falls.
What a shame. Clinton takes the blame for this.
Speaking about the send him back crowd, whatever happened to the logjam of other foreign custody battles that were supposed to be solved by Elian’s return? Never heard a peep about any of them again after that.
Every word he says, is crafted by the Regime.
Nor will you.
You mean against Castro’s wishes. Until it became world news his father didn’t care.
Did Elián González would have choose to stay in U.S. had he knew it’s hell in Cuba?
“Janet Sterno.”
Janet Renal
Castro IS Elian’s father.
There, there....that’s a good little Commie....
What conservatives were saying “send him back”?
