...We are coming on 25 years of Pete Rose's banishment...
Pete Rose played baseball with an intensity and love that might be unmatched in the game's history. He cracked more hits and reached base more times than anyone ever. He represented a way to play baseball that inspired millions of people. Then, he gambled on games, breaking one of baseball's most cherished rules. Rose is 72 years old now, and I think it's time to let him back into the game. I don't think anyone should ask him to apologize again or come any cleaner than he has. I don't think anyone should expect Pete Rose to be something that he is not. It has been almost 25 years. He has paid his debt.

I don’t know. Could be, but I don’t recall it.
Inspiring post, Lancer. Despite the fact I was a (mostly suffering) Mets fan, I had utmost respect for the way Rose played the game & I wanted to emulate him in little league when I was a kid. It’s a shame he won’t make the Hall, as he was probably the greatest hitter ever. :-/
I say let him in. Joe Jackson too.
Did you know Former Commissioner Bowie Kuhn banned Micky “F.ing” Mantle and Willie “F.ing” Mays because they took jobs with casinos after they retired? Ueberroth unbanned them 2 years later.
MLB News
Mangers of the year, Clint Hurdle (PIT) Terry Francona (CLE).
CY Young winners Clayton Kershaw (LAD) and Max Scherzer (DET).
Cy Young may have his the most wins ever; but if it's the seventh game of the World Series I want Koufax on the mound, even if he has 346 less wins than Young.
I was acquaintances with a former MLB player (who played in the 50’s) and once asked him what he thought was worse - gambling or drugging. He didn’t hesitate for a second and said “Gambling!”
If anything, they’ll let Rose in after he dies.
“Joe Jackson”: Certainly he and Buck Weaver (from the 1919 CWS team) should be taken off the banned list.
MLB news, the Tigers ship the Prince of Whales to Texas for Ian Kinsler.
And A-Roid throws a hissy fit, I’ve never heard him talk so much.
It appears that it was a case of dumping Fielder or Scherzer. I think I would have made the same choice.
Prince may do better in TX and work out for them but I see DET as the winner of this deal.
At least for the Rangers, it resolves the Profar conundrum, one way or the other, that had to get solved.
What a trade. WOW!!!
I bet Fielder’s horrible play in the ALCS made DET’s mind up. Good for them!!! The freed up money allows them to resign Max Scherzer. Ian Kinsler adds athleticism that DET needs. GREAT, GREAT move for DET. They should be (with a healthy Cabrera) the favorite in the AL for 2014.
At this point, A-Roid has pretty much overtaken Barry Bonds for biggest as*hole ever in MLB. Calling him a “tool” or “D-bag” are insults to those useful everyday items.
I hate to see fielder go but a DHer like Fielder is the kind of guy who provides long balls but doesn’t advance runners much otherwise.
I’d rather see a batter hit a bloop single to the outfield 3 of 5 at bats than 1 home run and 4 strike outs.
Fielder should do well in the Ballpark in Arlington, they really needed power from first base. And as I indicated, they had to decide what to do with Profar, either make him an everyday player, or trade him. Trading Kinsler solved that. So it’s a trade that makes both teams better. Double good for me, since the Tigers are my boyhood team, and the Rangers are my “home team.”
“Id rather see a batter hit a bloop single to the outfield 3 of 5 at bats than 1 home run and 4 strike outs.”
I agree. Brilliant move for DET all the way around. Look who they are replacing Fielder with - Cabrera.
A more than adequate replacement to say the least.
He just needs to be a more consistent hitter and I know he can. But he doesn’t run well, never has.
I never saw a steroid much less took some and I’m not in the HOF
bastards
screw Pete Rose. He’s a degenerate gambler and liar. Actions meet consequences
But Pete broke a rule that, as a manager, he was charged with enforcing. A rule that is vitally important to the game I love.
I can forgive him. But I can't support him for the Hall of Fame.
When I was coaching HS baseball, one of the coaches was really high on his “mission” to help restore Rose’s status. I thought it was a terrible example for the kids. At least it was clear to them that there are to sides to this issue.
not this again...
He bet on games, there is a rule that you can’t bet on games. He bet on his own games, games in which he controlled the outcome and when he didn’t bet on his games, it was a defacto bet against his own team. He did this to himself.
Amen. I always thought Pete and the Commissioner knew whatever happened was even worse than what was revealed such as actual bets against his own team for Pete to have essentially accepted the lifetime ban. But, put as you did, maybe it was all revealed and some are just too blind to see it as it was.
