The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) leadership had negotiated a new contract with Boeing that would have taken effect in 2016. The deal called for cuts in wage increases for union members, reduced health care benefits and lower company contributions to its defined benefit retirement plan. Some 67% of IAM members voted to reject the deal, and the union local president said that members had “preserved something sacred by rejecting the Boeing proposal. We’ve held on to our pensions and that’s big. At a time when financial planners are talking about a ‘retirement crisis’ in America, we have preserved a tool that will help our members retire with more comfort and dignity.”

The unions have stood up to the Democrats in Washington State trying to give out “Corporate Welfare”!
The union had a perfectly good opportunity to preserve and extend their job security, and they went ahead and voted against it.
Some 95% of the woe in this world is self-induced.
Call the union’s bluff, move the plant starting tomorrow.

The unions have been on a tare for some decades now “preserving benefits” in a manner that bleeds jobs from them.
It’s not a coal mine folks, it is an airplane. An airplane can be built anywhere and moved anywhere. It is the nature of the beast.
Do they use union made bullets when they shoot themselves in the foot?
I would recommend that they come to Michigan, but I’m afraid they will bring Seattle people with them.

Yeah, but the thought of the IAM and the UAW “competing” for the work wouldn’t be pretty now would it? But here’s an idea, build a new A/C plant on the land that used to have the not so good citizens of Detroit living on it.
I’m a Boeing shareholder. BA is up 1% today. Not a huge gain, but it appears to be viewed as a positive in the cold light of financial calculation.
The unions are overplaying their hand everywhere EXCEPT in government, where we appear to have given them the whole shebang at Federal (think SEIU) and local (think NEA, police, firemen).
Yep, and those public unions are everywhere. Biggest employers in many localities. Our friends, neighbors and teachers of our children.
And they voted Obama in twice.
A multi-billion dollar, multi-year proposition. That will delay the 777x rollout and would likely cost Boeing hundreds of orders. I think this is only round one of the contract negotiations and in the end both Boeing and the union will strike a deal somewhere in the middle.
Some years ago my kids had a guidance counseler who was a pretty cool guy. He was convinced he was the only teacher in the state (MA) who was members of both the NRA and the NEA.
