From PAULA BOLYARD's wonderful article on pjmedia.com:Compare and Contrast: Leno Interviewing Obama and Cruz
Does Jay have a double standard? On Friday, Texas Senator Ted Cruz made his first appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Leno, allegedly in his last season as host of the Tonight Show, has not been known as a particularly partisan entertainer,
so it was surprising to see him go "Candy Crowley" on Ted Cruz...-- snip --
...Some on Twitter compared Leno to a prosecuting attorney as he interrupted Cruz and accused him
of everything from shutting down the government to wanting violent psychopaths to have guns.Cruz, for his part, used the appearance to his advantage, clearly understanding both the venue and the audience. It seemed to go over well with the audience, which erupted into cheers after several of Cruzs points...
Although Cruz is certainly more than capable of holding his own in a debate with Leno,
he chose mostly to keep his powder dry, defying the media-generated image of him as a hostile aggressor.
He was relaxed and laid back, despite the tough questioning.THIS THREAD will help to review, analyze and document that historic event. :)
Please feel free to add YOUR positive comments and suggestions.
And who knows, the folks at TEAM CRUZ might actually READ what you post here. ;)
I couldn’t agree with you more.
While Obama got the Oprah style of questioning, Leno switched to Piers Morgan mode for Cruz,
asking him why he wants to let psychopaths run around the country buying guns.-- snip --
Leno ended the Obama segment with some fawning and softball questions:
Leno to Obama
Whats new with health care? Anything new?Despite the tough questions and a host that was less than sympathetic to his views, Cruz handled himself wellWell I was able to get health care for the guys who work in my shop for me theyre all over 50.
They never had health care and I was able to get it now because you cant be turned down.I thought you spoke very eloquently about the Trayvon Martin case and I could tell that you were speaking from the heart.
Tell me about that. You told a group of young people that broccoli was your favorite food.
Now, lying to voters is one thing. Lying to children, thats...
can you put your right hand on the Bible and say broccoli...Does Michelle make a broccoli cake with the broccoli icing?
Did the kids believe you or did they go, "Oh, come on!"?
in a venue that is obviously not his sweet spot. While Leno was certainly not hostile to Cruz, its clear he is not a supporter. Moreover, its a shame that Leno couldnt step out of his prosecutor shoes during part of the interview
so he could engage Cruz in some friendly banter to show his less wonky side.Lenos audience tunes in to be entertained, not lectured about the W.P.A. and the government shutdown.
Nevertheless, Cruz was relaxed and confident and the audience seemed to relate to his populist talking points
about entrenched politicians and Obamacare being a job-killer.He may have won himself a few new fans in the process, even though
he was not afforded much of an opportunity to show his softer, more human side.
I cannot beleive people have so easily forgotten all that. I know what team Leno is on, and has been all along.
Leno must’ve got pretty strict orders from his masters.
Wished the cameras had focused on the loud and proud Tea Party contingent. Thanks RonDog et al.

Shhhh! Let the world believe that a random LA audience really was supportive of Cruz’s remarks. Not ‘radical right-wingers.’
Ted Cruz probably has 20 IQ points on anyone that he engages in conversation. The man is brilliant. Unlike the Harvard Law grad who is in the WH now.
Way to go Ted! (((ping)))
I can agree with your point to a degree.
There is another important and probably governing factor, time
Leno, like Cavuto and even Rush sometimes presses the interview to get in all the points within the allotted time. Cruz made his points. He is a very, nay extremely, savvy interviewee. The goal is to limit the discussion to the main points and not spend a lot of time on unneeded garnishment.
Leno laid out the points rapid fire and Cruz provided rapid fire and directly on message response.
Unlike the Sebelius Congressional hearings, where she goes on and on eating up the very limited clock both Leno and Cruz completely understood the process.
In my view, both made outstanding performances
Shhhh! Let the world believe that a random LA audience really was supportive of Cruzs remarks. It is true that we had SOME southern California conservatives in the studio audience at last Friday's show...Not radical right-wingers.
...but almost EVERYONE ELSE that we met there were VISITORS from out of town - NOT "locals."I was pleasantly surprised with how many truly "random" audience members supported Senator Cruz.
In particular, I talked extensively to Ted Cruz supporters from Denver (Colorado), Canton (Ohio) and Ontario (Canada)......who had NO IDEA that Ted was going to be on the "Tonight Show" that day.
They were just good "salt of the earth" Americans from "flyover" country, who came to see Jay.
Jay lets his Hollywood close mindedness show through. The audience was agreed with Cruz.
Pray America will wake up
Thank you for posting the "LIVE" thread during last week's interview! For those of you who missed it, check out the 300-something comments posted in "real time" -- HERE:

Ted Cruz Ping!
If you want on/off this ping list, please let me know.
Please beware, this is a high-volume ping list!
Hi RonDog!
Just reading your thread now. Great job!
Thanks for the “Ted Cruz” PING, SoConPubbie!
:)
!!!!! will watch on youtube. Ted is a slickster (in a good way) He has watched Obama’s slickness and is doing it a lot better. Plus Ted Cruz actually has a high IQ/////fast on his feet//// While JugEars cruises along issuing boilerplate PC garbage he reads off the teleprompter. Without the teleprompter he is more boring PC and worse
Being unscripted is the worst thing for Obama... Not so for Ted Cruz
"Serious" TED CRUZ rocks TONIGHT SHOW with "Bad Jay" LENO [PHOTOS, analysis, FReeper "after party"!]Several dozen FReepers (and FRiends) met with Senator Cruz after his appearance on the "Tonight Show."
Here is FReeper Loud Mime's WONDERFUL PHOTO of him speaking to the Politichicks, and others at that PRIVATE event...
I wonder if Megyn knew that you and other FReepers were in the audience.
Could you tell how much of the applause for Ted was spontaneous from non FReepers and how much was driven by the applause from FReepers?
