A record-breaking 49.7 million Americans--one in six--now live below the federal poverty line, newly revised 2012 census data shows.

The new figures, which take into account medical and living expenses, are three million higher than the government's official number. The Obama Administration instituted the new metric two years ago but has not replaced the original methodology, which has been used for over a half-century. Only Congress could change the government's official calculation method.

"When so many citizens are worse off year after year, with food insecurity and health care insecurity, there's no way you can say that's a successful economy," Columbia University economist Joseph Stiglitz told the Associated Press

Defining poverty up. Flat screen TV, all the cable channels, reasonably recent cars, “free” food, housing, medical care, and edjumacation. Not to mention taxpayer subsidized beer, cigarettes, dope, and scratch-off lotto tickets. America’s poor are Somalia’s upper class.

RIGHT ON!

Approximately $15-trillion spent on government programs for the "poor" during the past 50 years. And what do we have? Record levels of people living below the "government doctored" poverty line. The destruction of the black family. The creation of America's "affluent poor." A massive transfer of wealth from the private sector to the public sector.

Sorry, but I don't consider someone who as a car, an air-conditioned residence, a broadband internet connection, cable TV, a TV, and many other optional luxury items to be living in poverty. Yes, America has "affluent poor" who live better than some middle class people in other parts of the world.

Let's call the "war on poverty" for what it is .... a money for votes program.

FTA...

"Among states, California had the highest share of poor people, hurt in part by high housing costs and large numbers of immigrants, followed by the District of Columbia, Nevada, and Florida," reports the Daily Mail.

Did you catch that? Lets repeat and emphasize.

"Among states, California had the highest share of poor people, hurt in part by high housing costs and large numbers of immigrants, followed by the District of Columbia, Nevada, and Florida," reports the Daily Mail.

Notice also a UK source is reporting this truth. Something our enemedia won't do. The answer to solving our poor people problem (if we even have one) is so obvious.

Some fracking and the Canadian pipeline would provide GOOD tech jobs as well as hard labor....freeing up the lower ranking jobs for the uneducated and/or lazy.

Working people provide Tax Money to the government. When will the Obama crew figure that out??

They’ll get what they want. 90% of these impoverished Americans will vote Democrat.

In most of the world poverty means you are struggling to find food and water for your family that day.

In Obama’s USA it means you only have two Obama Phones, one HD TV with premier cable, and you can only get one new laptop PC at the start of every school year.

Restore the import tariffs, put Americans back to work, restore American industry, reduce American dependence on foreign nations.

two Obama Phones

two seven Obama Phones.

Ga just passed a law that required 0bamaphone users to (horrors) pay $5 a month to cut back on the rampant fraud and abuse of the system. NATURALLY the colorful people were screaming that they couldn't afford this. Passed anyway.

These people have no clue as to what real poverty is.They will soon enough. The massive amount of spending by borrowing and printing fiat money will eventually come to a crashing end and it will effect everyone.

That's what congress thinks. Obama knows otherwise. He'll do as he damn well pleases.

This is just the tip of the ice berg. Millions of more are living paycheck to paycheck with nothing left over for home repairs, car repairs, termite protection and etc. America is mostly cut to the quick and there is no change in site. It will take hundreds of years to get Americans back to a standard of living they had before King Obama and his communists Democrats have destroyed our standard living. We are mostly slaves of the state now and cannot survive without some sort of government assistance.

Absolutely true. The borrow, print, spend cycle is not going to end well. One morning we’re going to wake up and suddenly find that the economic world has changed over night. The Big Reset is going to make 2008 look like a cakewalk.

Yes I did. One of the necessities of life that the "poor" just can't do without. I can't imagin how they managed to be poor 25 years ago when all they had was regular color TV, and cable.
