MANSFIELD, Ohio — Local authorities in Mansfield were tracking a pack of coyotes Friday after a man doing some lawn care was attacked.
He was riding a mower while blowing leaves along Springmill Road shortly before noon.
According to the Mansfield Police Department, about four coyotes rushed at him from a wooded area and one jumped up on the mower, scratching him.
The man’s jacket was torn and he suffered an injury to his arm but was able to drive himself to the hospital.

Those wolf cages for the kids they have out in Wyoming might come useful in Ohio.
Might be hard to cut the grass though.

My bet is against the critters being coyotes, and instead being some mix of coyotes and dogs.

Eastern Coyotes are quite a bit larger than their western cousin. They have taken the place in the food chain left vacant by wolves. They can weigh upwards of 75 lbs. They also hunt in packs, just like wolves. They have become more aggressive here in NH in the last 10 years. They do not seem to be afraid of humans like they were 20 years ago.
They routinely kill cats and small dogs around here. They have begun to attack small children. Attacking a full grown man on a riding lawn tractor is most likely a rabid animal.

The coyotes in southern Mi can run 50-60 lbs, I’m sure they are that big in Ohio too.
The coyotes around here aren’t the ratty little things they have in the southwest.

Hmmmm...not when one is dealing with the more and more common wolf/coyote hybrid. And a pack is still a pack..formidable
It said “pack.” That is not “A” coyote. What sort of weapon would he have on a lawn mower anyway?
The coyotes here in Michigan are not the “Wily” coyote/western types. They are BIG, possibly crossed with wolves or dogs. The coyotes in Mansfield, Ohio, may be of the same cross. I heard coyotes traveled in families, not packs. Are the authorities sure it wasn’t either a dog pack or a small type of wolf in a pack?

Coyotes have made a big comeback in this part of the world in recent years. Particularly in Ohio. A guy even caught one in a very urbanized Pittsburgh neighborhood about a mile from downtown.
The ones in SW Pa are becoming more urbanized. Pretty common site in the suburbs any more. Had a coyote competition hunt here and the biggest one was shot behind a Holiday Inn.
Not really...coyotes are smarter, more nimble and stronger than many give them credit for...this ain’t the Road Runner cartoon.
They typically hunt in packs and can present a significant threat.
Eastern Coyote’s very rarely attack humans in the entire history of the state of PA there has only been 1 recorded death of a human from coyote attack.
They also tend to hunt in pairs not packs...
I wouldn’t leave my small animals or children out alone in an area where they are known to exist, but this incident seems to raise some questions on whether these actually were coyotes or something else.
We have them here in northern PA too! They make quite a racket at night! I say shoot all of them!
