It said “pack.” That is not “A” coyote. What sort of weapon would he have on a lawn mower anyway?
The coyotes here in Michigan are not the “Wily” coyote/western types. They are BIG, possibly crossed with wolves or dogs. The coyotes in Mansfield, Ohio, may be of the same cross. I heard coyotes traveled in families, not packs. Are the authorities sure it wasn’t either a dog pack or a small type of wolf in a pack?
A small revolver fits nicely in ones pocket while mowing. I have Yotes in my area and I don't mow without it. For that matter I won't let my Ratty's go out without me standing there with larger pistol in hand till they get their business done. Oh and it comes in handy for the occasional Copperhead as well.
Coyotes are a small type of wolf: their proper biological name is “the lesser prairie wolf”. We had problems with a pair hunting in tandem that almost moved me to buy a crossbow with a laser sight — the only thing with sufficient lethality that wouldn’t run afoul of no-discharge-of-firearms ordinances where I live. They moved to other hunting grounds before I bought it.

After this? I would guess a high capacity pump shotgun, for that up close and personal protection.
