You have to be quite a wimp to be unable to defend yourself from a coyote.
Eastern Coyotes are quite a bit larger than their western cousin. They have taken the place in the food chain left vacant by wolves. They can weigh upwards of 75 lbs. They also hunt in packs, just like wolves. They have become more aggressive here in NH in the last 10 years. They do not seem to be afraid of humans like they were 20 years ago.
They routinely kill cats and small dogs around here. They have begun to attack small children. Attacking a full grown man on a riding lawn tractor is most likely a rabid animal.

The coyotes in southern Mi can run 50-60 lbs, I’m sure they are that big in Ohio too.
The coyotes around here aren’t the ratty little things they have in the southwest.

Hmmmm...not when one is dealing with the more and more common wolf/coyote hybrid. And a pack is still a pack..formidable
It said “pack.” That is not “A” coyote. What sort of weapon would he have on a lawn mower anyway?
The coyotes here in Michigan are not the “Wily” coyote/western types. They are BIG, possibly crossed with wolves or dogs. The coyotes in Mansfield, Ohio, may be of the same cross. I heard coyotes traveled in families, not packs. Are the authorities sure it wasn’t either a dog pack or a small type of wolf in a pack?
Not really...coyotes are smarter, more nimble and stronger than many give them credit for...this ain’t the Road Runner cartoon.
They typically hunt in packs and can present a significant threat.

How about 4 coyotes and you don’t have a weapon?

Douchebaggery is unbecoming.
Sounds he did defend himself. So I guess he’s not a wimp.
whew crisis averted
Not trying to dogpile on you (pardon the pun), but even a 40 lb. yote is a handful and can inflict some serious damage. Plus you get to go through a series of rabies shots to boot. Rethink.
Different animals employ different survival strategies. Coyotes hunt in packs and are opportunists. It would be more likely that you would be attacked by a pack rather than a single coyote. That is a slightly different scenario. Coyotes killed my neighbors two pit bulls.
If you are un armed, the 'yote has the edge. Those critters are quick and very athletic.
Not in New England. Ours are hybrids of Canada timber wolves and western coyotes. We had one male come through our yard that was easily sixty pounds.
I've read that their bite force is quite strong. Enough to break smaller bones.
