Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?
Thats the typical daily benefit for someone who gets food stamps. Millions of low-income Americans are dependent on the program, which is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for some if not all of their food money. SNAP benefits have just been reduced slightly, with the sunset of an economic-stimulus addition, and will likely be cut more by Congress before the year is through.
Here in Clark County, Share and the Clark County Food Bank are inviting the community to get a sense of life on that kind of budget by accepting the SNAP Challenge. Participants will commit to eating all meals from that tight SNAP budget of just $4.50 per day.
Visit clarkcountysnapchallenge.org to register for one day, three days or seven days in November. Youll be provided with guidelines as well as suggested shopping lists and recipes. All participants are encouraged to share their experience on facebook.com/clarkcountysnapchallenge, and to connect with other participants at #CCSNAPchallenge.
At 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, SNAP Challenge participants will share their stories at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. Thats part of a series of activities planned for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.
One thing that the bleeding hearts seem to always forget. It’s not the job of the taxpayers to feed people. The taxpayers are already working hard to feed their own family, why should they have to pay to feed someone else’s family too. That’s pure bull****! The SNAPPERS need to get some skin in the game.
The assumption that the whole concept of “free money” forgoes even trying to take the challenge. The challenge is justifying the entire welfare state.
> Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?
Yep. And save some.
Next question?
Pork loins on sale are cheap and make great pork roast. Cut them 3/4 to 1" thick and you have pork chops. I get western style ribs for about $1.29#, a bottle of bbq sauce and in the oven for 2 hours and its "almost" like having bbq ribs. I love fried chicken and chicken is inexpensive. Like Shake 'n Bake? Go on the internet and learn to make SnB yourself.
I love rice (but not everyday) a 50# bag at GFS or Sams or Costco, about $20-$22. Make a big batch for dinner and make rice pudding for dessert. YUM!.
Sams and Costco sell pancake mix in 10# bags, about $7-$8. When in Wisconsin I stop by a farm that sells their own Maple Syrup. 1 gal=$38 (compare to $15 a quart at the store)(a little more than Log Cabin, Aunt Jemima etc, but oh so much better). Thick cut bacon at GFS for about $2#.
Better Than Boullion is AWESOME. Make some homemade soup and some homemade bread. MMMMMMMM.
ps: every once in awhile I wind up visiting a Denny’s. I do not like Denny’s much more than McD’s. But if you plow through their big menu with a magnifying glass of sufficient power, you can eventually find where they’ve hidden their $4 Grand Slam meal.
It is not wonderful but it is worth the price, they give you two nice medium-sized pancakes (I do like their pancakes), plus two eggs any way you want them and I think two meat selections (you can have bacon, I always ask for turkey bacon, you can also have little sausages...).
Not a bargain but fairly reasonable if you want to get out once in a while and just sit down and let someone else prepare your meal for you.
I’ve always favored breakfast as my favorite meal, anyway.
McD’s Big Breakfast is a lot of calories for the money, considering it is a restaurant of sorts, too.
Mostly, I enjoy making my own food at home because I can get healthier food for the same money it costs to get less wholesome looking stuff at restaurants.
There are a lot of people who pay for their welfare getting less.
They are not skinny because it is bad salt laces hormone packed food.
Still, after a few months they need to go to work.
I feed 2 people on about $225 a month. And that's eating pretty well. $4.50 x 30 days=$135 per person.
Mmmmm...pasta, olive oil and garlic.
I’ve had both and the Burger King sandwich is better, IMO.
Both of our local McDonalds have eliminated their dollar menu, but the fairly new 7-11 has pepperoni pizza for a dollar a slice plus tax: $1.09. I dare anyone to try to eat more than two of those. Plus their taquitos are something like forty cents each.
I know a family on food stamps (Dad & Mom, 4 kids- all THEIRS, white, dad is employed) who get &167.00 a month. If you divided that out, that’d be only .89 a day. However, the dad knows that it’s SUPPLEMENTAL and uses it to his advantage to keep his family fed.
He cannot understand how he only gets $167, and there are people getting $600-$800 out there. He suspects it’s because he and his wife are married....and that he’s white. He’s grateful for the help, but wishes he didn’t need it.
Bacon and eggs or pancakes/waffles and sausage w/ real maple syrup and real butter, for breakfast.
Pork chops once a week. Fried Chicken once a week. Cube steak, pot roast, pork roast, ham steaks casseroles. I eat okay.
If you plan it right, you can “shop” at Costco and by the time you’re done have gotten a free lunch.
My wife left for England Oct. 23. I haven’t spent $4.50/day since she left and I probably won’t until she comes back in January 2014
I think BK is better on most things (except the have had some difficulty making good french fries consistently). When I had a better, bigger appetite, the BK double whopper w/cheese was a great sandwich for me! Far better than anything McD has on offer, far better I think.
As a kid, I could eat 3 of those. Today, I have to force my way through just one. ha!
I guess I should be happy to have lost 2/3 of my appetite. It means a lower food bill. ha!
happy day to you,
fhc
So your data belies the premise of the story. 200 a month is 6.58 per day - still not a lot, but it is 2 bucks more than the author would allow based on the initial premise. Then it went to 21.04 per day. There are a host of other options available for people if they are willing to take advantage of them.
Generally speaking when you lose your job you are entitled to some form of UI as well, usually (at least as of late) for several months to as much as 99 weeks.
There always seems to be a few anecdotal stories to the contrary, but I have to wonder about details - usually only the person directly involved knows the truth and sometimes they are less than forthcoming with said info.
The story you relate is sad, no doubt, but again I wonder about some of the details. Many people live in their homes for several years before they are physically removed by a sheriff’s sale (I personally know of a few people who did this).
I witnessed 2 weeks ago some bum buy an 18 pack of Budweiser.
So excuse me for not feeling an ounce of guilt for these bastards.
Pasta and sauce works well for less than $4.50.
Besides it’s called “Supplemental” not total source.
I like the Wendy’s bacon cheeseburger
