Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?
Thats the typical daily benefit for someone who gets food stamps. Millions of low-income Americans are dependent on the program, which is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for some if not all of their food money. SNAP benefits have just been reduced slightly, with the sunset of an economic-stimulus addition, and will likely be cut more by Congress before the year is through.
Here in Clark County, Share and the Clark County Food Bank are inviting the community to get a sense of life on that kind of budget by accepting the SNAP Challenge. Participants will commit to eating all meals from that tight SNAP budget of just $4.50 per day.
Visit clarkcountysnapchallenge.org to register for one day, three days or seven days in November. Youll be provided with guidelines as well as suggested shopping lists and recipes. All participants are encouraged to share their experience on facebook.com/clarkcountysnapchallenge, and to connect with other participants at #CCSNAPchallenge.
At 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, SNAP Challenge participants will share their stories at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. Thats part of a series of activities planned for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.
I don’t see why taxpayers get the shaft from the change.
I mean if the SNAPpers can’t buy Monster, do you really think they will forgo spending that amount of their monthly allotment?
You CAN buy three microwave meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 6 bucks or less... 4 bucks if you go with house brands. No cooking mom needed here.. just get the kids out of bed and at the microwave, you’re on an 8hr break until the kids get home from school, rinse and repeat.
You've got thick enough skin to not be bothered by what others think.
I know you. You do what's right and don't worry about the rest.
Keep your eye on God.
Right?
Get over yourself.
Bull! Tell the people on food stamps to try to live off our budget. We were on food stamps recently. Most money we ever spent on groceries.
I’ve also had FReepers tell me I should refuse to accept my GM pension (42 years of work for that) and Social Security and Medicare.
Armchair doctrinaires....
Morally yes. However, when the checking account gets overdrawn and checks begin bouncing (and they will, sooner probably rather than much later) It doesn’t really matter if it was the rent check or the gambling habit that pulled that last penny out of the checking account before the electricity bill hit.
I do think the military vets should be priority 1 though. The ‘gambling habit’ isn’t great for any country’s long term health. How we break that habit without ditching the vets is the trillion dollar question.
Exactly. That’s what many of us do to make ends meet...why wouldn’t folks getting assistance want to make the most of their *supplemental* income and manage it well? I’ve yet to see one LoneStar beneficiary (SNAP) use coupons. Not saying they don’t, I’ve just not seen it.
YUK! but that’s a purely personal opinion of the particular product you’ve posted,... .YES, you do make a good point that even on $4.50 a day, a person can eat out a little bit (and is not TOTALLY limited to vegies, rice, beans, and peanut butter sandwiches)
‘There is no way anyone using SNAP is only using that and nothing else for their food purchasing! They always have other benefits ....’
WELL I’M NO EXPERT BUT I DO VOLUNTEER AT THE LOCAL FOOD PANTRY.....WE GIVE GROCERIES AND I MEAN A LOT OF EM TO EVERYBODY WHO SHOWS UP...NOT ONLY THAT IN THIS TOWN ...EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE WEEK SOME ENTITY OR ANOTHER...A CHURCH OR SOME OTHER ORG. DOES THE SAME....SO...ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SHOW UP....AT THE RIGHT PLACE... EVERYDAY AND YOU GET FREE FOOD......WE EVEN GIVE OUT FREE PET FOOD...

BS. What about the woman who gets 1,100 plus a month?
That’s pretty much the only thing I can afford at a restaurant. It isn’t terrible.
They have everyone beat on soup, eggs, dairy and hot dogs.
For awhile I was enjoying (using the term fairly loosely) McDonald’s dollar menu... they had a double cheese burger on it. Now, I am given to understand they have raised the price on that item. While I do not really care for McD’s food, I have to give them credit for that sandwich ...it was a pretty good deal at a dollar a pop.
I do not know what they charge now with their “Value Menu” replacing their “dollar menu” (so they can jack up prices on us, damn it!) but you may wish to just stop in McD’s and see what they are charging for it. It really wasn’t a bad-tasting sandwhich
Best,
fhc
While some are truly in need of assistance, there are many who scam the system. To those grifters, you should be in prison for fraud.
That's what family is for.
Oh great idea. Hurt the grocery merchants even more. They have already started feeling the pinch because people have been trying to save up the credits for the following month.
Try working this month.
