While I’m closer to Sarvis’s viewpoint than Cuccinelli’s on marriage, marijuana, and I am sure other policy issues as well, there have been a number of concerning red flags about Sarvis’s positions.
Take tax policy, for instance, where Sarvis just doesn’t sound like a libertarian at all to me. Virginia is around the middle of the pack when it comes to tax climate, and could desperately use additional reforms in a time when the state economy is doing so well to lighten the burden on workers. Yet Sarvis told Chuck Todd he didn’t actually favor more tax cuts, but finding savings through more efficiency. In that interview, he also endorsed expanding the Medicaid program in the state under Obamacare – which most libertarians in Virginia have been fighting tooth and nail. Despite going through George Mason’s program, he doesn’t sound like he shares their views, telling Reason: “I’m not into the whole Austrian type, strongly libertarian economics, I like more mainstream economics and would have been happy to go elsewhere.” That makes sense, given that he’s endorsed more transportation taxes, too – including higher gas taxes and instituting a vehicle-miles driven tax in the state.

Yep, he is in this race for one reason only, and that is to siphon off some votes from the GOP so that he can help the RAT win. If you investigate this guy, I bet you would find a few millionaire democrats (Soros, Bloomburg, etc) donating to his campaign.

Calling it now-Hillary will win because a third party will split the GOP vote.
The best plan the Dems could implement to win elections is to fund libertarian candidates in 3-way races. They’re going to figure this out sooner or later, especially if “hope and change” stops putting butts in the seats.

Notice that he admits that Sarvis is lefty/libertarian on many issues, like the homosexual agenda, but that Sarvis isn't conservative enough on economic issues.
Libertarians=liberals who want conservative economics, which is an oxy-moron of course, you can't have economic conservatism without social conservatism.

The LP was founded in Denver at the Muddy Waters café. I have been to LP meetings there. Finding a leader in the LP is like finding a leader in the tea party - such does not exist.
I found the complete lack of authority figures refreshing. Every person wanting to speak is allowed to. The only organization is that used to get somebody on the ballot in every race.
The feller in this article would have been out of place at a Denver LP meeting so he probably is a plant.

Sarvis is on record that he wants to tax carbon emissions, but still squawks about his “limited government” platform.
During last night’s debate, McAuliffe noted that he and Sarvis share many of the same views, and contrasted them with the “radical” views of Cuccinelli. That convinced me that Sarvis is just a stalking horse.
Based on the campaign finance numbers, that seems unlikely.
Anybody have a link to the Chuck Todd comment mentioned in the story? I seem to recall that Sarvis wants to eliminate income taxes in favor of sales taxes and/or user fees, so I'd be interested in seeing the clip about not wanting to reduce taxes.

This is not a new tactic by any stretch. Remember a guy named Ross Perot? And who did we get as president? Bill Clinton.
He may have his flaws as a libertarian in some ways, but the author does point out that he is a good libertarian as far as being a social liberal.
