Michael Stravato for The New York Times
Bruce Labay, a businessman in El Campo, Texas, on Friday. Mr. Labay expressed his support
for Senator Ted Cruz by attaching plastic foam cups to a fence.
HOUSTON Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas and the face of the angry right, has been criticized, lambasted and lampooned for putting the nation through a 16-day government shutdown and the prospect of a financial default.
Bloomberg Businessweek put him on its cover as a mad hatter who defines how crazy is the new normal. Representative Peter T. King, a Republican from New York, has said Republican leaders need to go after Mr. Cruz and accused him of bringing the country to the edge of ruin.
In Texas, it is a different story.
Drivers speeding down a busy highway about 70 miles outside Houston have been greeted with two blunt messages that Bruce Labay put up at his oil field services business. One declared that Mr. Labay was tired of softhearted Republicans, though he used a more colorful adjective. The other read, We Need More Republicans Like Ted Cruz.
Mr. Labay, 55, made his signs by sticking 1,200 plastic foam cups, one by one, into the loops of his chain-link fence, a 90-minute project that filled much of the fencing around BL Oilfield Services in the town of El Campo.
I was proud of him, Mr. Labay said of the states junior senator. I was proud he was a Texan. I wish they would have held firm, and wed still be shut down. .......

I would that Mr Labay had cupped CONSERVATIVES, not Republicans.
Sarah really knows how to pick um.. Go Cruz and and Sarah! About all we have left in the country that I trust.
One of the things I noticed that when I saw Cruz on TV he was constantly challenged with attacks from all sides. Personal attacks. He never bought into that, and simply went back to pointing out the damage that Obamacare is already causing to the economy.
Yes, and when he was asked about the personal attacks or so and so said this about you, etc., he basically said he wasn’t going to go there and didn’t.
King, McLame, Pelousy, Reid, Obummer, et al don’t get a) that a person can respectfully disagree and not result to name-calling and bad mouthing, and b) what it means to support and stand up for your constituents (well, maybe Pelousy does since she’s from San Fran and Obummer did promise to “transform America”, though I supect not all/most of those that voted for him (e.g., Low info voters) knew exactly what that meant - they should have listened to us - we had his number from the get-go).
Another lousy political consultant from the Big Blue Anus, Austin. Just like Karl The Talking-Double Chin Rove.
Karl, the great, did little to counter the MSM when Bush was in office opening the way for Obama to be elected, and the MSM to throw out
any drivel they wanted to disqualify any perceived threat.
1. Palin
2. Romney
3. Cruz
Notice, I left out McCain, as he is one of their favorites and actually does their job for them quite often.
e.g. Nothing to fear from Obama.
And another lie that the Socialists media and politicians are allowed to go unchallenged trumpeting is that the Republicans caused the shutdown. No it was Obama and Reid that caused the shutdown. the House funded everything that required funding as was their authority under the Constitution. Reid and Obama refused to accept it. Each time I hear someone say that the Republicans caused the shutdown, I correct them, though I doubt if it does any good.
Agree
Don’t know if you saw Hannity last night. He had a collection of both
sides , including David Webb and Tamara Holder.
The Dems do one thing well. Ignore questions, and shift the blame.
Hannity does a very poor job of keeping them on topic, and pinning them to specifics.
The only thing worse than one of his groups is “ rat on my head “ Frank
Lunz focus group......
He never bought into that, and simply went back to pointing out the damage that Obamacare is already causing to the economy.
The difference between an adult and a child.
No offense to Sarah, but she also picked the weak, whining Kelly Ayotte. No one could have known what a disaster she would become. Bob
I’m from PA and I’m just as proud and supportive of Ted Cruz as the people from Texas. We need many more like him, keep the pressure on them Senator Cruz!
I probably will visit next year or so. I don’t plan on relocating there: I couldn’t deal with your oddly horrible gun carry laws. I don’t mind it for a visit but it wouldn’t work for me long term.
Which marxist don’t y’all like? Groucho, Zeppo, or Harpo?
Ted Cruz wasnt defeated, the GOPE was.
I agree, he has moved an awoken the downtrodden TEA Party members who thought all was lost. I hoped Obama Care could be defunded. But I knew with old RINOs in Washington it wasn’t going to happen. What Rafael Cruz did in waking up those, who properly inspired, TEA Party folks will be nothing short of amazing come election time. The only way the American people will be defeated is if the opposition cheats and how deep their deception goes.
I fear the elite in Washington know what is going to happen having seen it before so they have sent their people out to counter it with continued voter fraud. I was called by Harris County to work the upcoming Mayoral election. After last time I decided no more. But then I thought about the Cruz/Dew Hurst runoff and that man who drove from Dallas to Houston just so he could vote for Cruz, and I changed my mind. We need to do the little things consistently to take this country back.
Can we say Allen West?
Super RINO Rep. Peter King did an interview with Fox earlier this p.m. and trashed Cruz with a vociferousness not even reserved for Democrats.
Not just TX either
This is silly. The idea that Ted Cruz shut the government down is ridiculous.
True and and no one picks 100%. So far I love my sen Cruz. However he is new. Before we take a bullet for him lets watch and see how it goes. So far the only two who have practiced what they preached have been Sarah and Ted. However she has a long track record. He is so far so good. And He also supported Ayotte.
I admire Ted Cruz and feel bad that all the pussy Republicans abandoned and betrayed him
Cruz knows that if you are unpopular INside the Beltway, you will be VERY popular OUTside the beltway!
Who really shut down the government?
