Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch
KSLA ^

Posted on 10/14/2013 3:16:11 AM PDT by Red in Blue PA

Shelves in Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, LA were reportedly cleared Saturday night, when the stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though they were not showing limits.

The chaos that followed ultimately required intervention from local police, and left behind numerous carts filled to overflowing, apparently abandoned when the glitch-spurred shopping frenzy ended. Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Walmart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Walmart was so packed, "It was worse than any black Friday" that he's ever seen. Lynd explained the cards weren't showing limits and they called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman said to let the people use the cards anyway. From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700.00 and only had .49 on her card. She was held by police until corporate Walmart said they wouldn't press charges if she left the food. Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts full of food in the aisles and left.

"Just about everything is gone, I've never seen it in that condition," said Mansfield Walmart customer Anthony Fuller.

Evans believes it was natural human reaction that led people to fill up their carts during the glitch, but Walmart shoppers Stan and Judy Garcia feel very differently. "That's plain theft, that's stealing that's all I got to say about it," said Garcia.

“Excellent point, but more like 16.6% weeds.”

You are probably right but I was trying to be kind to those who may be classified as weeds/parasites but in reality have taken themselves off the government plantation and decided to become just Americans and not some hyphenated XYZ-Americans.

Ok. No groomer, instead we brush him ourselves and clip his claws, although the vet does it as a free service with check ups. No crate. His food is more than the list. His license is $3. Toys are maybe $30/year as we avoid things he could destroy in a minute. Instead, I give him heavy cardboard tubes from towels and wraps so he can shred them, satisfy that urge and do it for free. He still has puppy toys and some hand me downs from the previous dog. I also put balls in old socks and let him free the ball. He is finicky, so treats are usually a spoonful of peanut butter or some homemade apple ships or homemade dehydrated liver or bones we save from our meals or get from the butcher at the locker plant. Vet bills are less than the listed price, although the neuter was more. Vectra tick repellent often had bonus months for free and otherwise runs promotions.

We have had the same cat carrier for 20+ years. It was cheap. She also ignores treats except for some finely chopped raw venison once in a while or finely chopped chicken. Sees the vet every few years for shots. No license.

I figure about $1000/year or less for both of them.

Quibbling over nits. My point is that owning pets isn't cheap, and IF you're on welfare you have no business owning a pet, which is a luxury, at the expense of your fellow americans who actually pay for all of that "free" stuff welfare recipients get.

They have done it before to keep prices low for customers, few people know that and it was in the billion dollar range.

I don’t begrudge anyone a pet.

The point is that people can and will sacrifice for beloved animals.

Food benefits are definitely subject to fraud and I agree that many on SNAP make poor and expensive choices. I think drug testing would be appropriate. There are ways to cut costs for smoking or drinking (Aldi’s has $3 wine and discount soda, for example and beer is cheaper than soda. You can roll your own for $10/week).

I know lawful citizens who need SNAP, WIC, etc. I am wary of lumping everyone into one box just because this economy and administration have gone out of their way to extend benefits. Where I live, it is 99% white and we just don’t see much of the outrages people see in urban areas. When I shop in the city 45 miles from here, I see Mexicans on SNAP and usually I see a lot of beans, rice, tortillas and cheap pork in their baskets. It is their teenage kids I see with carts full of processed food. They don’t shop like that when Daddy and Mama are buying. I have loitered to watch and the difference is striking.

On topic, the people who stole food were wrong and they passively bullied the stores into allowing the theft. The stores had few, mostly poor, choices.

There are millions of Americans who have elected to shop at Walmart to save what little money they have left.

Perhaps you should wear a sign on your back when you shop there...I’m not like you, I’m just cheap.

I don’t begrudge anyone a pet.

I do if I'm paying for it.

You can spot the EBT users because they have their beer and pet food separated from the rest of their groceries. So what I'm doing is subsidizing their frivolaties with money I work hard for.

You want to own a pet and get assistance? Fine but you get $1500 a year deducted from what you get for every dog you own. $640 a year per cat. I'd let 'em have mice, rats, and cockroaches for free.

Public company. They’d have to disclose it.

That set of figures was one of the first that came up when I googled Walmart’s intake of EBT $$$

Likely under ‘loss’ of merchandise. No way to distinguish it then from stuff that just walked out the door the day before, or day after. Unless they give totals/month.

“The company says it will reapportion $1 billion in its current fiscal year to keep the prices at low levels in the food and consumable businesses.”

Thats money that was already set aside for something -capital expenditure perhaps, that was being moved around internally.

And that is the way it is done. They will even list the dad or any other man they are living with on their quarterly income reports as roommates. I worked for the welfare dept many many years ago. Almost every single mom had a male ‘roommate’.

That behavior is incentivized by liberal policy.
And your average sheeperal won’t admit it, and will get cause and effect reversed, so as not to threaten their sense of self-righteousness.

I see few honest blacks. Sad but honest truth. All they do is steal or stand around watching their brothers steal.

I don't question at all what you see around you

But to broad brush nearly all blacks by what you see is not indicative of the black population in general.

I do question the statement "all they do is steal or stand around watching their brothers steal."

If that is truly what you see, I hope you call the police on that criminal activity.

You re correct about the vegetables at Walmart not being cheap.

I walk by bins of veggies on my way to the pharmacy, and am gobsmacked at the high prices, advertised as “low price.”

I shop at various markets in the area to get the best deals.

They are NOT at Walmart. And one small great neighborhood market closed down as Walmart is going to be a superstore in this area in the near feature.

They use the same tactic as Safeway, virtually ALL the price signs there say “Safeway low price” and they are the most expensive grocery store in the area.

Including me. But I spend MY money there. Not other people's hard earned money that was confiscated without consent.
