For more than a year, Assembly Speaker John Pérez dated a Hollywood funeral director who faces fraud allegations in one of the biggest financial scandals to rock the U.S. funeral industry.
During their relationship, Pérez, a Los Angeles Democrat, mixed political business with his personal life in ways that showed poor judgment, ethics experts say. A Pérez spokesman said the lawmaker conducted himself appropriately during a casual dating relationship.
Tyler Cassity, proprietor of a boutique cemetery called Hollywood Forever as well as a Mill Valley cemetery, and defendant in a $600 million fraud lawsuit in his native Missouri, accompanied Pérez to a series of high-profile public events.
Meanwhile, in St. Louis, Cassity, his parents and his older brother are defendants in a 2009 lawsuit that contends they looted millions of dollars from trust accounts and insurance policies that were supposed to be set aside to pay for customers' funerals.

Tyler Cassity
Before moving to the St. Louis area, Cassity was a young lawyer in southwest Missouri. In the 1970s, he ran an investment club in Springfield, Mo.
A federal investigation uncovered a scheme full of intertwined corporations and missing funds. Cassity pleaded guilty of conspiracy and tax fraud violations in 1982, lost his law license and served six months in federal prison.
He is not a very good crook.

Originally, I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to write gay novels like Dale Peck. So that’s what I studied in college.

Brent Cassity and his brother Tyler were key to building the family’s multimillion-dollar funeral empire, which would include 26 interrelated companies controlled by a family trust before the family’s downfall and the companies’ demise. In the mid-1990s, Brent and Tyler Cassity founded Forever Enterprises, based in St. Louis, to create digital biographies (or LifeStories) shown at funerals. The brothers found favor in Hollywood, and consulted on HBO’s series “Six Feet Under,” which aired between 2001 and 2005.

Yep, I suspect that old Sam Kinison stand-up comedy bit about necrophilia was all too accurate.
