NAIROBI, Kenya The attack by al Qaeda-linked militants at an upscale mall in Nairobi killed at least 59 people and wounded 175, Kenya's interior Cabinet secretary said Sunday.
Multiple barrages of gunfire erupted Sunday morning from inside the building where there is a hostage standoff with Islamic extremists nearly 24 hours after they attacked using grenades and assault rifles.
"The priority is to save as many lives as possible," Joseph Lenku said, reassuring the families of the hostages in the upscale Westgate mall. Kenyan forces have already rescued about 1,000 people, he said.
Lenku said that there are 10 to 15 attackers involved, and Kenyan forces have control of the security cameras inside the mall. Combined military and police forces surrounded the building.
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga told reporters at the mall that he has been told officials couldn't determine the exact number of hostages inside the mall.

I say arm everyone. Watched CNN yesterday while on the treadmill because Fox doing some infomercial, and all they could say about Kenya and Chicago killings is stop "illegal" guns.
Not a one said anything about the gangsters procuring guns from outside the system. They couldn't understand why crime has gone down according to FBI stats. Citizens have more guns, criminals not as likely to attack - simple equation. However, one black guy did mention it's time we consider the black youth and their fatherless lives and all the video games, violent TV shows, violent rap music.
I don't see a solution to this other than arming everyone, since our culture will not change. However, once the savages know they will ultimately lose, these mass shootings may decrease. But then, we will always have the singular crazies. Again, arm ALL! One or two CCW could make the difference in a mall or elsewhere no matter who the prick is. CONCEALED CARRY FOR ALL! Or at least OPEN CARRY!
Isn’t the targeting of civilian populations and taking of hostages a violation of international conventions on warfare? Doesn’t that cross a red line? When do we start bombing? But, more importantly, who do we bomb?
Personally, I would like to see public hangings as punishment. Back in the wild west, it had quite an impact on the bad guys. I've read it was a main reason the west was tamed. The LEO's were not politically correct and hung them in the town square.
Officials like Wyatt Earp, Bill Hickock, Bat Masterson, Judge Roy Bean just hung the pricks. Our legal system is too soft. Even when we do execute the bad guys, it's through lethal injection. They put them to sleep with one chemical and then kill them with another. I hope I go out the easily.
Convict and hang 'em high in full view and on national TV! Have a special pork ceremony for the barbaric Islamist savages. Make it hurt as much as possible like they did to Daniel Pearl. Make it slow and painful. Yes, I'm that cruel when it comes to these barbarians who slaughter innocents. Sue me.
