STOKES COUNTY, N.C. An assistant fire chief with the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department is in intensive care at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after being mauled by two Labrador retrievers Wednesday night.
Officials say Bobby Jones was attacked while hunting off Hall Road, where he was bitten more than 40 times.
Its believed he was wearing a scent to hide human scent while hunting, which may have set the Labradors off.
The dogs were up to date on their shots, their owners said, and have been surrendered to animal control.
Firefighters are planning a fundraiser tonight to help Jones family. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department, 102 Old Church Road in Danbury.

Scent more important than sight to dogs.

Hunting and still couldn’t defend himself? Perhaps he should not be allowed to hold a gun.

Maybe he was just hunting their plot...
Prayers for recovery.

If they surprise you and you drop the gun then it’s a different situation. My neighbors pit bull charged at me recently in the dark. By the time I saw the dog he was close. I was drawing my gun but not sure I would have had it out in time.....owner called the dog off.

Those vicious Labs. The whole breed should be destroyed.

Those vicious Labs. I've got one, and if you're not careful he'll sit on your foot and beat your ankles black and blue with his tail.

Yeah, wearing a scent that’s “not human” while hunting is as iffy as voting for “change.” It’s good to get more specifics before committing yourself.

Hunting “off the road” doesn't tell us if he was trespassing onto their property. If so, then he got what he had coming although animal control won't see it that way.

I know that area, on the back side of Hanging Rock State Park. An outside access area to the park’s Lower Cascade Falls is on Hall Rd. Pretty area, all privately held with the exception of the parking area for that access. Nice views well into Virginia. Large farms, large stretches of woodland, a few “estates,” a few modes houses and a few mobile homes.
Not very populated. Dogs typically aren’t fenced, but know “their” territory. Either those weren’t full Labs or he set them off somehow. Even high-prey field-bred Labs aren’t going to maul somebody without provocation.

Maybe he was bow hunting?

Wonder what the heck he’d be hunting at night?
If those scam “deer hunter scent blockers” work that well then the Labs thought they were keeping deer out of the garden.

As the owner of a 70-pound Lab who backs off from our 9-pound cat when it’s just trying to rub on him, I can’t get my brain around the idea of Labs mauling someone.

Have you seen the You Tube video of the Dog Whisperer getting bitten by the food aggressive blond lab? The premise of the show is dealing with problem dogs so he gets bitten fairly often but the lab chomped down on his hand and didn't let go.
This was probably the only time that they ever had to stop filming the show.
