OSU Police Obtained Army Surplus Armored Personnel Vehicle

COLUMBUS, Ohio -

The Ohio State University police department has added a very unique new tool to their fleet: an armored military vehicle.

If you want the ultimate in protection, an armored personnel carrier is the way to go. If negotiations work like they did for OSU's Department Of Public Safety, you could get one for free.

Lindsay Komlanc, director of marketing and communications at OSU said the police department obtained the vehicle through Army surplus at no cost.

Although it still looks like an armored military vehicle, she said police plan on changing the appearance by removing the top gun turret and repainting the rest of the vehicle.

"This unique, special purpose vehicle is a replacement for a police fleet vehicle and will provide us with enhanced capabilities as an all-hazard, all-purpose response vehicle," Komlanc said.

Police Chief Paul Denton was not available Tuesday, so NBC4 was unable to find out specifics for where an armored vehicle could be used on an urban campus.

Guess they’ll use this the next time the fraternity keg party gets too loud?

For every can, there is an opener. That thing looks like it could get hot.

I guess that they’ll be used to enforce the collection of fine for overdue books from the university library.

I’m sure the MRAP V-bottom improves the aerodynamics....better fuel economy, right?

Columbus' local police force does not have a bomb squad.
"Frankly, we have to be. We are the primary responder."
my guess; they expect some "rough times" ahead ...
(like the OWS types)

It was free?

Guess it makes more sense than the U.S. Department of Education having SWAT Teams.

Don’t know about the OSU Campus Cops, but the Cowboys I have met there are OK.

Seriously, we do business with their foundation seed operation and they are a great bunch of people.

Knowing Oklahoma like I do, I lived there 7 years, I doubt even the campus cops will get in trouble with this vehicle.

You're probably right about that, since the truck is at Ohio State. : )

For every can, there is an opener.

Long ago, before “American Graffiti” I knew of some guys that got carried away with a bit of a prank. The were all good boys from good homes and they aspired to be scientist, doctors and one wanted to be a US Senator.

They attached a steel cable to the rear axle of a parked police car and a very solid post.
20 MPH? (~30 FPS) at 3500lb.Thats enough energy to do some damage.

Some of this bunch still have an old newspaper article with a photo about this event.

It was free?

The article says its a replacement for an existing vehicle. If we knew what that that vehicle was, we'd have a much better idea of whether this thing is, given the cost, a suitable replacement.

High schools?? Yes, absolutely.

Those people desiring to pray before a high school football game can get pretty rowdy sometimes. They might need to be subdued....or something.

That’s okay. The way the parking situation is at Ohio State, they well may have to store the thing in Oklahoma.
