There is still time for a concerted effort to roll back Big Government, if we do not allow ourselves to be suckered by the political establishment or distracted by sideshow issues.

Some but libertarians will do all they can to destroy their gains.

It usually starts with this idiotic claim that they’re taking control.

Just allow anything? NO

Love of drugs? NO

IMO many are social liberals and fiscal conservatives, so I don’t think Republicans are going there unless you mean the current establishment ones.

...78% of Republicans consider themselves to be "fiscally conservative, but socially moderate,"...

It's good to see the Pubs attract new voters, but Romney is the perfect example of what happens when our candidates are fiscally conservative and socially moderate. They lose.

Increasingly I find myself in that camp that is looking from the outside and thinking why should I vote for a party that doesn't have enough sense to understand we are not a bunch of barnyard animals.

We should retire the work libertarian. Some folks hear it and their brain just shuts down and they yell incoherently.

Republican voters have embraced libertarian values

The Republican rank and file have always embraced freedom and liberty i.e. small l libertarian values. The GOPe has always embraced Big Government Crony Corporate Socialism-lite. I think the libertarian monkier is just being used by small government Republicans to differentiate themselves from the Lindseed Graham, Romenycare GOPe types.

I sure wish it was mandatory to print the full details of all poll questions because it makes a world of difference.

Conservatives “socially moderate”?

Well if you mean don’t force me to pay for others deviance YES. I am willing to live and let live (and let God sort it out)

If you mean, helping those, WHO THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, have fallen on hard times and need to get over the hump, YES.

If you mean equal work for equal pay, YES.

If you mean equal OPPORTUNITY, YES.

If you mean being OK with money I earned stolen by force and given to those who continue to make pi$$ poor life choices then NO.

If you mean government sponsored race based discrimination under the guise of Affirmative Action, NO.

If you mean equal outcome over equal opportunity, NO.

The reason more people are considering themselves libertarians is that the libertarians has started to shed the nut image and conservatives lost their way on big government. IMHO, the two have met rather than true conservatives converting to libertarian.

this thread was on here a week ago.

Also if one wants to get rid of the CIA, FBI, have no sex age laws, get rid of all drug laws, allow public sex, nudity, sell drugs outside schools, open borders, small military, sex with animals, have incest, beastiality and homosexuality taught in schools etc then fine but that is more to do with anarchists and radical liberals, hell even most liberals will not go that loony.

they can be as “socially moderate” as they want, but the reason those values are part of the conservative message is because they prevent harm to individuals, groups, communities, culture.

All the venom here from conservatives for a group of people who, if were somehow put in power tomorrow would commit the horrible act of....leaving people alone unless they were harming somebody and expect the same treatment in return. Seriously, folks, if you can’t find common cause with people who want nothing from you but to be left alone, you better get used to being a very unhappy minority because it’s not like there are any groups out there knocking others out of the way to stand with you.

Re: “66% of [ALL] respondents consider themselves to be fiscally conservative.....”

This poll is useless.

Two years ago, total government spending in the USA almost reached the same level as in World War 2.

Then, the 66% of voters who claim to be “fiscal Conservatives,” went to the polls and reelected Barack Obama.

This is just one more example of people stealing the “Conservative” label when it suits their vanity or their political purpose.

Socially moderate Republicans are silent when business owners are punished for practicing their faith. Guess being Libertarian only matters when it means supporting gay rights.

A lot of Republicans I know are no longer calling themselves that. We’re Conservatives! The Republicans currently in DC are gutless except a handful.
