The libertarian philosophy is taking the Republican Party by storm, according to a poll conducted by FreedomWorks, a DC-based grassroots service center with over 6 million members.
With Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) and many other liberty-minded politicians gaining influence, libertarianism has generated new interest inside the Republican Party, much to the chagrin of the GOP's political establishment....
"FreedomWorks' poll shows that 42 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of the word libertarian,' and only 10 percent don't know the word, compared to 27 percent who don't know nationally," they added.
And the term "libertarian" may still turn off some Republican voters, the basic message of the philosophy earns significant favor. The poll found that 68% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents agree with the statement that "individuals should be free to do as they like as long as they don't hurt others, and that the government should keep out of people's day-to-day lives."
What's more, an eye-popping 78% of Republicans consider themselves to be "fiscally conservative, but socially moderate," which is a significant finding given the debate in the GOP on social issues.
Looking outside of just the Republican box, the poll found that 66% of respondents consider themselves to fiscally conservative and socially moderate.
These numbers show that the libertarian message is appealing, not only to Republican voters, but also to all Americans; further advancing the case for conservative-libertarian fusionism as a way to promote free market ideals, limited government, and personal liberty....

Some but libertarians will do all they can to destroy their gains.
It usually starts with this idiotic claim that they’re taking control.
The “Liberal” party won recent election in Australia.
That party is actually gets it name from being Libertarian.
No support for many of the libertarians from me. I am a Ted Cruz Tea Party Conservative.
Just allow anything? NO
Love of drugs? NO
IMO many are social liberals and fiscal conservatives, so I don’t think Republicans are going there unless you mean the current establishment ones.
Libertarians are, IMO, just as evil as liberals.
DA-DA, see what a switch of party in WH can do??
After four years of GOP POTUS?
It's good to see the Pubs attract new voters, but Romney is the perfect example of what happens when our candidates are fiscally conservative and socially moderate. They lose.
Increasingly I find myself in that camp that is looking from the outside and thinking why should I vote for a party that doesn't have enough sense to understand we are not a bunch of barnyard animals.
We should retire the work libertarian. Some folks hear it and their brain just shuts down and they yell incoherently.
work = word.
Yeah, Yeah, and before the election, conservatives were in high number.
These polls are meaningless because it is self perception and identification.
80% of Americans think they are middle class lol.
Well, you’ve got a problem. If you think that about Republicans, what do you consider the dims think about you? A farm animal sexual partner? You are in a quandary, I’d hate being you.
Moderate is just a nice way to say “liberal.”
Social liberals for sure in many cases. Like a bunch of Kennedys.
The Republican rank and file have always embraced freedom and liberty i.e. small l libertarian values. The GOPe has always embraced Big Government Crony Corporate Socialism-lite. I think the libertarian monkier is just being used by small government Republicans to differentiate themselves from the Lindseed Graham, Romenycare GOPe types.
Quick!
Don’t take those nasty conservatives seriously.
Look over here.
See the bright, shiny object?
I sure wish it was mandatory to print the full details of all poll questions because it makes a world of difference.
Conservatives “socially moderate”?
Well if you mean don’t force me to pay for others deviance YES. I am willing to live and let live (and let God sort it out)
If you mean, helping those, WHO THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, have fallen on hard times and need to get over the hump, YES.
If you mean equal work for equal pay, YES.
If you mean equal OPPORTUNITY, YES.
If you mean being OK with money I earned stolen by force and given to those who continue to make pi$$ poor life choices then NO.
If you mean government sponsored race based discrimination under the guise of Affirmative Action, NO.
If you mean equal outcome over equal opportunity, NO.
“I am a Ted Cruz Tea Party Conservative”
Cruz is pro-liberty also.
And so was Reagan:

I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism -Ronald Reagan
The reason more people are considering themselves libertarians is that the libertarians has started to shed the nut image and conservatives lost their way on big government. IMHO, the two have met rather than true conservatives converting to libertarian.
I don’t think Ronald Reagan would be celebrating gay marriage and bringing kids to pot festivals.
