The SSRI antidepressants have a noted side effect of "homicidal tendencies". Virtually all of these type events have a common linkage to usage of these mind alterating drugs. Do you think it may be time to investigate this perhaps?

It is the evil pharmaceutical industry’s fault.

It figures.

When are we going to find out what kind of drugs the Sandy Hook and Aurora shooters were taking?

I’m stunned the New York Times would report this - it’s not the liberal meme...

Trazadone is not an SSRI and otherwise is a benign, often useless drug. The worst side effect he may have experienced was a raging 8 hour erection. The guy was mentally ill for some time, as documented, and this the simplest and by far the most likely explanation for his violent spree.

Trazadone is an older SARI-class antidepressant, not an SSRI.

But, true, the “S’ does stand for Serotonin and it does affect the same neurochemistry.

Generally, though, the time these drugs are most noted for creating or exacerbating violent tendencies (toward one’s self or others) is when the dosage is changing up or down. I don’t know if that was the case here.

Be advised the author Ann Tracy is not a medical doctor and has no psychiatric training. She has a relatively meaningless doctorate in "Health sciences with emphasis on psychology," which basically means a whole lot of nothing.

Trazadone is routinely used as a night time soporific because it generally has the side effect of causing drowsiness, although it is not totally reliable at that. It is not much used as an antidepressant because it never proved to be very effective for that purpose.

This man had a serious mental disorder and was violent for years before the recent shooting. Trazadone was the least of his problems.

Even the hormones in “natural” cures for insomnia can cause mood swings.

Trazodone is a hundred years old and not a spooky drug. Its usually written in low bedtime dose to knock people out, like 50mg or so. Once every couple years you’ll see someone taking a few hundred mgs a day, like when nothing else has worked and there’s nothing else to try, and they walk around like zombies.

Nidal Hassan and Aaron Alexis were huge Democrat Obama supporters. We need to look into what code words or dog-whistles Barack Hussein Obama (mmm mmm mmm) has been using to set off these homicidal maniacs.

Trazadone isn’t exactly an SSRI. It works at 5HT receptors, true but depending on the receptor it either works as an agonist or antagonist.

Trazodone is not an SSRI. It is a much older class of medication called a tca (tricyclic antidepressant) These are not used as antidepressants any longer, but are the favored non addictive sleeping medication.
Sometimes people are just crazy. They were crazy before taking meds and meds are not responsible for their actions.

For heaven’s sake, leave my small Trazadone sleeping pill alone. If I didn’t take that, I would never go into deep sleep and that’s been proved. It doesn’t take much for me but I don’t get deep sleep without it. It was my pain specialist who put me on that.

I think what happens is, GP doctors who don’t know what they are doing, just hand out pills right and left for no particular reason.

I was surprised to see this article with “Trazadone” as a “bad” drug - my little pill. Maybe they are giving huge doses of it. It isn’t a controlled drug as I don’t have to show ID to get it refilled.

Drugs plus, as the Wall Street Journal reported, “hardcore alcohol use.”

Chemicals pile up in the brain and they’re so common and ordinary and widely used that nobody bothers to add or subtract to estimate the overall effect.

Here’s one overall effect.

I have been on that drug for years due to fibromyalgia and costochondritis. A few years ago I quit taking it cold turkey. The only effect that had was that I wanted to cry all the time. When I told a friend who was a psychologist, he let me know very quickly that was a very bad idea. I am the odd one though. I never get the common side effects, it is the one that bothers less than 5%.

Nope we just need more gun control according the liberals. The fact that years ago when most people had firearms and seriously mentally ill people were locked up shootings like this did not occur but rarely. Now that we regulate firearms and allow seriously ill people to determine their own freedom/treatment we frequently have mass shootings. (I acknowledge conditions mental patients were kept in were deplorable and if done again things would have to be different)

Trazadone is not an SSRI, it is a very old tetracyclic antidepressant. Frequently used for sleep. I have taken it and didn’t feel the need to do violence nor did evil thoughts creep into my brain.
