Judge: Strippers Must Be Paid At Least Minimum Wage

A federal judge ruled this week that exotic dancers at a Midtown strip club are protected by labor laws and entitled to be paid at least a minimum wage.

The ruling came Tuesday in a class-action lawsuit brought by current and former dancers at Rick’s Cabaret, at 50 W. 33rd St. The lawsuit against Peregrine Enterprises – the subsidiary that operates the club – and the club’s Houston-based parent company, charged that the strippers were denied wages and required to pay a variety of fees to the club.

The club had argued that the dancers were independent contractors....

One of jobs back in college was a strip club DJ.

Best job in my life until I got to Hollywood. It paid for my school (some of it) and I got credit for my business management thesis when I volunteered to balance the books. The “after work” activities I cant even say on the board LOL

It's obviously been awhile since I worked in food service.

I gave it up years ago when the boss wouldn't give me a raise because he'd have to give the servers one too. I pointed out that they lived on tips whereas I worked in the kitchen, never got a tip in my life...

It is not uncommon if you are even reasonably good to make $500 in a four hour hour shift.

But, in my state they have to pay stage fees, DJ fees, and bar fees. Essentially they are renting the ability to perform at the club. That $500 a shift disappears quickly, and if she's new or at a crappy club (they don't get to pick) the girl can actually owe money to the club. That's when the "agent" (Pimp) gets her better paying work.

I'm all for the girls getting at least minimum wage. It will bring in better talent and reduce the pimping aspect.
