Politico has an eye-opening piece today revealing the extent to which the White House is staring defeat in the face over Syria. According to the influential Washington-based publication, President Obama doesnt have the votes in the House of Representatives to secure a win, with large-scale opposition among Republicans, and lukewarm backing among Democrats:
If the House voted today on a resolution to attack Syria, President Barack Obama would lose and lose big. Thats the private assessment of House Republican and Democratic lawmakers and aides who are closely involved in the process.
If the Senate passes a use-of-force resolution next week which is no sure thing the current dynamics suggest that the House would defeat it. That would represent a dramatic failure for Obama, and once again prove that his sway over Congress is extraordinarily limited.
The loss would have serious reverberations throughout the next three months, when Obama faces off against Congress in a series of high-stakes fiscal battles.
If Obama doesnt get Congressional backing for military action, he could still go ahead with strikes against Syria, but it would be a huge political gamble. It would probably be a bridge too far for a president with sinking approval ratings, and his party facing crucial midterm elections in 2014.
A defeat in Congress would be a massive blow to the Obama presidency, as well as to the presidents personal credibility, and could well amount to the biggest humiliation of his career so far.

The rabbit hole goes deep, very deep, on this one.

Just wait till the video comes in of more children dying—or if they can get one of a few of our ships rolling over and heading to Davy Jones Locker taking with her all hands. Wait til the new 9-11 with sarin in the subway of New York or Boston? Then America will respond the way the Progressives want! maybe they can Burn the Capital building! It work with Hitler and his goons didn’t it?
Good. He can follow in David Cameron’s footsteps.
There will be dancing in the streets when odumbo is defeated. I remember as a kid when WWII ended, indeed there WAS dancing in the streets, banging on pots and pans, car horns blowing, whistles tooting and on and on. Defeating odumbo on this sharade will be almost as significant. Alas, he still has those pesky “executive orders”?
Like he did with Obamacare, it’s time to start handing out money to the opposing dems? Just askin’.
"For the true believer no proof is necessary" Stuart Chase. 0 has 51% of the country as true believers. He could be caught in bed simultaneously with a dead 12 year old girl and a live 8 year old boy and that 51% would excuse his actions. The MSM worships that ground he walks on and fights for a chance to stick their noses up us a$$ (as does repulsive NJ governor Christie, nominally a Republican) With the Republican establishment compromising (read caving in on) everything that tyrant wants, and the Democrats and media thinking it would be a step down for that incompetent narcissistc turd to be God, ratings just don't mean much.
Mouth wrote a check his butt couldn’t cash.
I actually think this will toss him over the edge...he is not above launching an attack on his own. If he does not, he will strike out against anyone who questioned his plans...he will be a terror as he takes out his frustrations on the US population. This guy has never been told NO in his whole life and will have a tantrum.
It makes no difference. He’ll still pull the trigger since he has already told us he needs no stinkin’ congressional approval for such action.
So what's the holdup? Waiting til they do have the votes?
It’s a defeat of his own making, and the repercussions are going to reach further than Syria right now. Obama is going to be far more quick to pull the trigger on any future issue without going to Congress just to prove that he, and by his extension the U.S., needs to be reckoned with. And it’s going to make the job of whoever replaces him a lot harder.
A great cause for celebration in my opinion.
Thank goodness for the UK Telegraph!
“A defeat in Congress would be a massive blow to the Obama presidency,”
Except once he is defeated,,the media will spin it as him being “thoughtful” and “studious” and “respecting the wishes of the American people”
I heard he brought in the spin doctors of yester year to help him with this. I assumed it was to help sell it. Now I suspect it’s to help re-frame HIS defeat.
We’ll see
That is one neat looking cat there Nana.

That is a reasonable assessment but does not consider the other players nor what is actually accomplished. In another thread it was noted that allies would participate in the action in Syrian skies. That would be Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Their air forces are vulnerable to Syrian air defense missiles. That is , they lack the capability to take them out. America on the other hand likely does. So, the Obama ordered action will provide for destruction of Syrian Air defense capabilities and clear the path for the allied air.
The entry of the allies will placate America to the point where although very disgusted, the action will be accepted
Oh, recall if you will that the Qatari armour stopped Saddam’s armour at Kafgee while invading Saudi Arabia and the only Iraqi plane shot down was killed by a Saudi F15 pilot. They have capable militaries
A defeat in Congress would be a massive blow to the Obama presidency, as well as to the presidents personal credibility, and could well amount to the biggest humiliation of his career so far.
Enough reason to vote NO right there.
