Politico has an eye-opening piece today revealing the extent to which the White House is staring defeat in the face over Syria. According to the influential Washington-based publication, President Obama doesnt have the votes in the House of Representatives to secure a win, with large-scale opposition among Republicans, and lukewarm backing among Democrats:
If the House voted today on a resolution to attack Syria, President Barack Obama would lose and lose big. Thats the private assessment of House Republican and Democratic lawmakers and aides who are closely involved in the process.
If the Senate passes a use-of-force resolution next week which is no sure thing the current dynamics suggest that the House would defeat it. That would represent a dramatic failure for Obama, and once again prove that his sway over Congress is extraordinarily limited.
The loss would have serious reverberations throughout the next three months, when Obama faces off against Congress in a series of high-stakes fiscal battles.
If Obama doesnt get Congressional backing for military action, he could still go ahead with strikes against Syria, but it would be a huge political gamble. It would probably be a bridge too far for a president with sinking approval ratings, and his party facing crucial midterm elections in 2014.
A defeat in Congress would be a massive blow to the Obama presidency, as well as to the presidents personal credibility, and could well amount to the biggest humiliation of his career so far.

If we want America to KEEP any credibility, the Congress will DEFEAT this insanity!!
The idiot and stupid red line.
It’s mostly what you would expect from a college professor-pretending to be more than what he is. I think Gringrich would have done the screw-up....if he was President. Once you hint of something....you usually need to carry it out.
I’m not falling for it - every time I read that the Republicans are going to stand up to the Bozo in Chief, they fold. Nope, not getting my hopes up. My new motto - aim low, avoid disappointment.
What personal credibility? Is this from the Onion?
“Barack Obama is heading for a humiliating defeat over Syria:”
Barack Obama is heading for a humiliating beat down over Syria:
Just like the way I said it better.
Well I can imagine still can’t I?
woot! this made my morning!
A serious person can stand down with confidence. Assholes kill for their inadequacies.
A great cause for celebration in my opinion.
that lunatic mccain calls the rebels "freedom fighters" but in reality they are radical muzzies who are part of al-qaeda- the ENEMIES of America and are most likely being paid by the saudis to get rid of assad.
all of these idiots in DC who support attacking syria are in effect supporting al-qaeda and should be tried for treason beginning with that anti-American strunze who has contaminated the oval office.
Amen!! Assad did NOT do the chemical weapons release....he had NOTHING to gain from it....he was winning!!
so obama loses the vote to make congress his accomplices in an attack on Syria, or the vote is never held because he would lose it
what happens THE NEXT DAY?
what happens when an angry petulant obama has to face his real job - getting congress to approve even more debt so he can continue to run the economy into the ground or shut down the govt. Something tells me he will be VERY vindictive against the crackas who bombarded their congressmen to vote against his war
I disagree wholeheartedly.
1. Obama’s mission is to hurt America. He’s downgraded our credit, what, twice? Huffing and Puffing and setting up a big showdown, then backing off, will hurt American credibility big time. Win for Obamam.
2. It’s Congress’ fault. Campaign on that next fall? You bet. Win for Obamam.
3. Assuming we DO shoot a few missles, what would we aim at? If I were Obamam, I’d be ensuring to mess up any trail that may exist back to Libya. THAT would also be a win for Obamam.
4. End result of any action in Syria is MB and Alqueda topple and take over the power there. Obamam scores again, as he’s MB friendly. Win.
What downside is there? A little bad press that the press will wring their hands over? Ever seen Obamam suffer over any of that?
Minor correction.
“Tailored strike” sounds like a sewing circle or a Martha Stewart episode helping fags pick out fabrics for their drapes more than a military operation...
The idiot and HIS stupid red line...(let's be clear about that)
