E-Cigarettes Finding New Users in Teens
Time ^ | Sept. 05, 2013 | Alexandra Sifferlin

Posted on 09/05/2013 4:20:42 PM PDT by Drango

Touted as a way to quit smoking, the latest data raise concerns that electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, may actually be a gateway for teens into tobacco use.

~snip he said. “Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes.”

Most addictions to nicotine start at a young age,...suggest that a vast majority of students who use e-cigarettes also turn to conventional tobacco products as well.

~snip Whether e-cigarettes are actually safer than regular cigarettes isn’t clear; a recent study found that e-cigarettes can cause increased resistance in the airways, making it harder to breathe, within minutes of inhalation of the vapors, while other studies have suggested the products can help smokers to quit.

The Food and Drug Administration is currently studying the data on electronic cigarettes and plans to issue a regulatory rule on the products soon. ~snip

The agency’s rule will certainly take into consideration the question of how teens are using e-cigarettes, and will consider studies that investigate whether the products serve as a gateway to other tobacco use. “About 90 percent of all smokers begin smoking as teenagers. We must keep our youth from experimenting or using any tobacco product,” Dr. Tim McAfee, the director of the CDC Office on Smoking and Health said in a statement.

If, as the results suggest, e-cigarette use is tied to tobacco use among teens, then electronic cigarettes could be just as enabling as conventional cigarettes for nicotine addictions. “These dramatic increases suggest that developing strategies to prevent marketing, sales, and use of e-cigarettes among youth is critical,” said McAfee.

I have been a vaper for a year and a half now. Using the EGO platform and presently enjoying the Kanger T3 clearomizer (though it is a bit of a juice hog). My next order of supplies, to be placed probably this weekend, will be stuff for DIY juice.

My brother and sister and I all switched to ecigs over the last couple of years and we have realized benefits from doing so, not the least of it being improved health which is important as we have passed that half a hundred mark.

To the ass-hats so concerned about the children I don't give a rat's kazoo. This is about me and my family - their parents can raise them as they see fit and everyone else can just butt out.

I pretty much stick with white wine, although I do use a lot of Chianti in cooking, and so drinking that goes well with those dishes!

Likewise. Started 18 months ago on 36 mg juice, now down to 6.

This is a revolutionary product. And some are quite chapped that their particular sector isn't in on the chips.

That's the way the ball bounces I would say, then comes the government to try and muck it up. Grrr...

I wasn’t even speaking of second hand smoke; I was speaking of first hand smoke. Though it is better you also respected your neighbor. To that end, the vapes are helpful if you are too weak to resist needing that fix. Complain about etiquette if you must, but shoving God into a corner is exactly what put this country into a curtailed-freedom fix with government presuming to do what only God can. Don’t try to put the Lion of Judah in a cage. He’ll break out and you’ll find Him purring in your ear again asking if you are ready to quit treating Him like a pole cat.

I’m trying to help you in TWO ways here if you’d quit being as allergic to God as some are to secondhand smoke. One way, I’ll give you enough space to smoke or vape yourself to death if you won’t listen to remonstration about how that disses the God who made you and sustains you and hopes to bless you. Not even God contends forever so why should I? The second way, I’ll show you a more excellent way that will explain why it’s good to make a break from the nicotine habit. God has no grudges and will save anyone who is willing to get out of their own little bubble onto His reality.

Like I said... shoving God into corners like you are attempting to do is exactly why this is now a low-freedom country.

I’ve never gotten an “etiquette” complaint in many weeks of gospel stumping here... until you, Gabz. Well God gives no care about man’s etiquette when that means for Him to just stifle.

Agreed, a lot of this is propaganda by big pharma to push their drugs, also a whole lot is funded by anti smoking groups who fear that these e-ciggs will as they say, “Normalize smoking again” and that is their real fear.

Its always about control of the people..

All I know is a good e-cigg works wonders and many people have quit using real ones, while using the electronic ones.

My etiquette issue was you were speaking of me by name in a post and did not show the courtesy of pinging me to it.

And while my personal relationship with God is none of your business, what part of my commenting earlier in this thread about caffeine being more difficult for me to give up than nicotine did you not understand?

Of course it is.

I never tried them, but I know far too many people who found them to be the best way to break the habit. And they are definitely more successful than anything being promoted by the pharma and anti-smoking cartel.

pure, nicotine is a poison

Anything is a poison, dosage is the critical issue. The nicotine found in a cigarette or a salad, is insufficient to cause any problems. The "nicotine is a poison" meme is a misleading scare tactic, nothing more. A salad is a virtual buffet of naturally occurring insecticides and "poisons". Nicotine has a wide range of positive benefits, and no serious negative effects. Contrary to the claims of this article (and other pseudo-scientific babblings), nicotine is not very addictive (comparing it with a real addiction like alcoholism or cocaine addiction is nothing short of ridiculous). Is nicotine a "poison"? Yes. And so is just about everything that you breath, or otherwise consume.

I think adults and parents have a duty to look out for children.

Agreed.

Government, however, does not have that prerogative.

I could do “all over the place” when I was younger, but not so much any more.

I still enjoy carrying an unlit cigarette around the grocery store in order to clear the fat chicks out of the candy aisle.

Your personal relationship in the eternal battle is ultimately everybody’s business. Would you say that in the Cold War it mattered if your allegiance was to the Communist Bloc or America?

I said it is none of yours, and I meant it.

Not only that, but those who produce real cigarettes are not happy campers are are really losing what’s left of their butts.. (no pun intended).

All corrupt government wants to do is regulate and tax ecigs to prop up their bloated government retirement pensions and line their own pockets.
