This summer wasnt the best time for Subway sandwich shops the worlds largest restaurant chain to stumble.
Founder and owner Fred DeLuca the driving force and vision behind the Milford, Conn., chains growth into a 40,000-unit chain is in a Connecticut hospital getting treatment for leukemia and, he has told associates, is awaiting a bone marrow transplant.
Still, the 65-year-old billionaire businessman is directing the chains operations from a hospital bed.
The hands-on owner is still in daily contact with regional managers trying to find new ways to reverse the sales decline, a Subway development agent told The Post.
Same-store sales at the closely held company dipped 2 percent last month and are down over the last several months the first declines in recent memory, sources close to the company tell The Post.
Faced with the business setback, DeLuca is not letting his hospital stay stop him from continuing a recent discount marketing blitz aimed at igniting revenue growth, the sources said.
DeLuca in June launched a $4 lunch special a six-inch sub, beverage and chips and plans the re-introduction next month of its popular $5 footlong campaign....

I wouldn’t like it or not like it because I wouldn’t do it at all for that. I wonder how much this allows the owner to pay himself?
I’m pretty sure that for this he gets no benefits.
Welfare would be better.
It is not that things are too cheap in this country it is that there are not enough people working, too many on the dole and taxes take too much of what we earn.
I like Subway. On whole wheat and avoiding sugar it is probably one of the healthiest lunches you can have. I think it is good value for the half deal compared to any other fast food place.
Hoagies .. youbetcha !
I was around here the first time for junior high, before we got transferred again.
My scout troop in Lewisburg sold enough custom hoagies - made by the parents, sold and delivered by us - to buy all new tents one year.
'Course they were green, and canvas, but omg they were like the Hilton to us back then !
Loyalsock Twp. here - we had our hoagie sales as well. I can still smell the onions and vinegar/oil! There was a place in Montoursville - Cellini’s - that made the best hoagie back then. There are probably still sub shops on every corner in Williamsport. As it should be!
Competition.
Actually, if they improved their bread recipe, they could pick up some more customers. People prefer subs on excellent bread, and Subway's bread is meh.
I get the Italian cold cuts with the maximum amount of everything on it, smothered in oil. Then I dump the ingredients onto a plate and throw away the bread. It's not a bad price for a salad.
Check the "other names" under "cosmo". Hah - all the Catholics would eat Cheese Cosmos on Friday night when they got sick of eating fish. Love it!
Having it toasted in-store helps a bit.
I remember eating subs from Ralphs’ Submarine Sandwiches on Harbor Blvd in Santa Ana, CA. The bread was chewy and had substance. Best subs I ever had.
Subway’s bread is glorified white bread. They might as well put “Wonderbread” on the wrappers.
Haven't been there in years, and they may not be there any longer, but there's a little sub/pizza place on the square in Marysville that makes/uses the absolute best bread in the world !
Zeiderelli's (sp?) .. worth the stop if you get down that way.
I don't go in for any or those melted cheesy type subs...
In CA, if you order a Sandwich at Subway “to go”, there is no Sales Tax.
If you order the sandwich “to go”, but you want it toasted, you pay Sales Tax.
I think Politicians must have had extensive Substance Abuse problems at some time in their lives, just like Obama admitted to having.
Seriously?
I will have to try that again...
Subway sells decent basic sammidges for a decent price. Hope they don’t change that.
I don’t believe we’ve met, but I like your screen name.
As a general rule, I don’t do slop joints.. But thanks anyway.
JJ’s is good but still over priced.
